SUNYAC Announces Men's Basketball Yearly Honors

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) announces the 2019 men's basketball top individuals and all-conference teams voted on by the conference coaches.

Player of the Year - Jonathan Patron, Plattsburgh

 

Senior forward Jonathan Patron has been chosen as the Men's Basketball Player of the Year for the second year in a row. Patron averaged a double-double this season with 23.7 points per game and 10.7 rebounds per game. The senior is the conference leader in total points (615) and in total rebounds (277). Notable games throughout the season were his 32 points/20 rebound game against Oswego, 34 points/14 rebound game against Brockport, and his 41 points - matching his career high - and 10 rebound performance against Buffalo State. Patron's offensive prowess enabled him to etch himself into the Plattsburgh record books by breaking the career points record. He was selected to the 2019 SUNYAC Men's Basketball All-Conference First Team for the second year in a row as well.

  

 

 Rookie of the Year - Danny Ashley, Brockport

A graduate of Uniondale High School, where he earned Nassau County Player of the Year, Brockport freshman guard Danny Ashley averaged 8.1 points per game as well as 3.6 assists per game overall. Ashley in total dished out 100 assists over the course of the Golden Eagles season. Although only starting in 15 of Brockport's total 28 games, Ashley was able to make notable impacts in those games. He notched an 18 point game against Geneseo, a 23 point game against Oneonta, and was able to drop 34 points in Brockport's SUNYAC quarterfinal matchup against Potsdam.

 

 

 

Coach of the Year - Jason Leone, Oswego

In his 8th season as the Oswego men's basketball head coach, Jason Leone led the Lakers to a 22-5 overall record thus far (15-3 in the conference) and a victory in the 2019 SUNYAC Men's Basketball championship. The Lakers were able to hold off Oneonta in a thrilling 73-69 double overtime game in the SUNYAC semifinals and then go on to beat Brockport 55-50 in the championship. Leone led Oswego to their eighth overall SUNYAC championship this year, their second in the last three years. Jason Leone and the Oswego Lakers will look to continue their success in the NCAA tournament this year.
