SUNYAC selects Ice Hockey Athlete, Goalie, and Rookie of the Week recipients

CORTLAND, NY- The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has selected its Athlete, Goalie, and Rookie of the Week for men's ice hockey.  This weeks Athlete of the Week is senior Aidan Verbeke from Brockport, Goalie of the Week is sophomore David Richer from Oswego, and Rookie of the week is freshman Jimmy Poreda from Plattsburgh.  

Verbeke led the Brockport offense to a 2-0 record this past weekend. He racked up three goals, three assists, with a plus-four on-ice. His best game of the two match-ups was the 5-3 win over Morrisville where he had a power play and shorthand goal while dishing out two assists.

David Richer was spectacular in the net in the Lakers' two wins over the weekend, only allowing one goal at Buffalo State and recording a shutout at Fredonia. On Friday, Richer recorded 14 saves in the win, playing all 60 minutes in the net. The sophomore followed up with a dominant performance on Saturday, recording a career-high 36 saves against the Blue Devils. With the shutout, Richer's goals against average drops to a minuscule 1.49, earning him the top spot in the nation. Richer is also third in the country with a save percentage of 0.938.

Poreda posted a 40-save shutout in the Cardinals' 1-0 win over SUNY Potsdam on Saturday evening to keep Plattsburgh State in the thick of the SUNYAC playoff race. It tied a career-high in saves for Poreda, who also turned aside 40 shots against Wesleyan University back on Jan. 16. For the year, Poreda boasts a .906 save percentage and a 2.85 goals-against average.
