SUNYAC announces weekly awards for men's ice hockey

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has selected the recipients for its weekly men's ice hockey awards. Plattsburgh sophomore Jimmy Poreda (Tonawanda, N.Y.) is the Goaltender of the Week, Geneseo junior Tyson Empey (Swift Current, Sask.) is the Player of the Week, while Oswego freshman Travis Broughman ( Mechanicsville, Va.) has been recognized as the Rookie of the Week.

Poreda backstopped the Cardinals to a 2-0-0 week to start regular-season and SUNYAC play, posting a .980 save percentage and a 0.50 goals-against average. He posted 29 saves in a 5-1 win over Morrisville State on Friday before posting a 21-save shutout in a 3-0 victory over the Mustangs on Saturday. Poreda currently leads the SUNYAC in save percentage (.980) and is second in the conference in goals-against average (0.50).

Empey scored two goals in the first five minutes of Geneseo's 6-1 win at Fredonia on Friday. He later added an assist as the Knights' won on the road against the Blue Devils for the first time in three years in a rematch of last year's SUNYAC Championship game. Empey also tallied an assist in Saturday's 4-4 home tie against Buffalo State to finish the week atop the SUNYAC with 10 points and six goals so far this season.

Broughman notched his first two collegiate goals in the Lakers' 4-2 regular season opener win over Cortland on Saturday. The freshman accounted for the first goal of the night, as well as the game-winner. He also tallied an assist for three points in his first official contest at Oswego.
