Game of the Week: Plattsburgh wins 3OT thriller against Oswego

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Game of the Week comes from the men's lacrosse matchup between Plattsburgh and Oswego on Saturday, April 13. Plattsburgh scored in triple overtime to improve to 3-1 in conference play. 

Sophomore attackman Connor Wolff (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) gave the Cardinals the early lead with a goal on a Jake Carroll (East Northport, N.Y.) feed, but Oswego scored two straight to take the lead. Junior midfielder Dan Doolan (Lake Grove, N.Y.) tied the score with 10:42 left in the first quarter on a feed from junior attackman Evan Hollfelder (Hamburg, N.Y.) before senior attackman Bobby Emerson (Lake Grove, N.Y.) connected with junior attackman Eric Kiel (Hamburg, N.Y.) for a man-up goal less than a minute later. Sophomore midfielder James Sherwood (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor) knotted the game at two with 8:35 left in the first before Hollfelder staked the Lakers to a 3-2 advantage with 4:33 remaining in the first.

Doolan broke the scoreless run with a goal for Oswego 4:02 into the third quarter, while Plattsburgh's Jack Mullen (Long Beach, N.Y.) scored two unanswered goals to tie the game at four heading into the final regulation period.

The Lakers netted a pair of goals from Doolan (unassisted) and Emerson (from Hollfelder) to seize a 6-4 lead with 9:03 left, but Plattsburgh was able to dig itself out of the two-goal deficit late in the fourth. Mullen scored unassisted at 4:01 of the fourth before Carroll converted on a Mullen feed with 3:09 to go to tie the game at six.

Plattsburgh outshot Oswego, 4-0, in the first overtime, while the Lakers had a 5-0 count in shots for the second overtime period.

Carroll scored 37 seconds into the third overtime period to lift Plattsburgh to a 7-6 triple-overtime win over the Lakers. Oswego won the third overtime's opening face-off, but Carroll forced a turnover right off the draw to give Plattsburgh possession. Just seconds after the turnover, the Cardinals called a timeout. Eighteen seconds following the timeout, Carroll netted the game-winner.

Senior attackman Jake Carroll is this week's Player of the Game notching 2 goals, 1 assist, 1 big caused turnover and the game winning goal in triple-overtime. 

What's Next:

Plattsburgh hosts Potsdam on 4/24 and then will travel to Brockport on 4/27 to round out conference play as we head into playoffs. 

Oswego will play Geneseo, Cortland and Oneonta in the upcoming weeks to try and secure a spot in the SUNYAC playoffs.
