Cortland sweeps SUNYAC men's lacrosse weekly honors

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) selected Cortland teammates Brian Williams and Marc Esposito as the league's first 2021 Men's Lacrosse Athlete and Goalie of the Week respectively.

Williams helped guide the Red Dragons to a 1-1 record during their opening week of the season. In a 14-6 victory at Potsdam in non-conference action on Tuesday, Williams won 13-of-14 face-offs and collected nine ground balls. He then won 9-of-15 face-offs and secured eight ground balls at home versus nationally top-ranked RIT as Cortland played to a tough 12-8 loss to the Tigers. For the two games, he won 22-of-29 face-offs (.759) and scooped up 17 ground balls.

Esposito posted a 1-1 record with an 8.86 GAA, 21 saves, a 58.3 save percentage and four ground balls for Cortland last week. In a season-opening non-conference win at Potsdam on Tuesday, Esposito stopped seven shots and allowed just three goals in 26:35. He followed up with 14 saves and two ground balls in a tough 12-8 setback at home versus nationally top-ranked RIT on Saturday.
