Season Ends for Cortland Men's Soccer with 1-0 OT Loss to Franklin & Marshall in Sweet 16

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Jason Tonelli scored just two minutes, two seconds into overtime to lift the nationally 14th-ranked Franklin & Marshall men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over sixth-ranked Cortland in the NCAA Div. III "Sweet 16" Friday night at Messiah.

With the win, the Diplomats improved to 15-3-4 on the season and face Calvin on Saturday with a berth in the "Final Four" on the line. The Red Dragons had their single-season school-record 14-game winning streak snapped and finished 19-3 and tied for ninth nationally.

Junior goalie Connor Young (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) made five saves for Cortland and suffered his first loss of the season (14-1). Goalie Dave Reingold stopped four shots for Franklin & Marshall. The Diplomats also recorded two team saves.

Junior Ma'Cain Spragling (Akron, OH/Brush) paced Cortland with six shots and had a late second-half chance denied by Reingold with a leaping save at the upper 90. Senior Nick Tata (Rochester/Aquinas Institute) managed four shots, while seniors Tyler Kirschner (Dix Hills/Half Hollow Hills East) and Daniel Friend (Deer Park) each took three shots with Kirschner narrowly missing a goal late in regulation.

Cortland outshot the Diplomats, 21-16, in the game. The 19 wins set a new single-season record, breaking the old mark of 16 last accomplished in 2014.
