SUNYAC Presents Men's Track & Field All-Decade Accolades - SUNYAC

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) announces its Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Decade, Coach of the Decade and All-Decade Team as nominated and voted on by the institution's sports information directors.

To be eligible for the All-Decade Team, athletes must have competed in the SUNYAC at least one season during the 2009-10 academic year through 2019-20. All-SUNYAC honorees, conference/meet record holders, Athlete of the Year, All-American honorees, national champions or athletes that qualified for nationals in more than one season were considered. Athlete and Coach of the Decade recipients were previously named SUNYAC Athlete of the Year or Coach of the Year.

SUNYAC Men's Track & Field Athlete of the Decade - Nick Guarino
Guarino won five national titles over two seasons, two as a junior (indoor mile and indoor 1,500), and three as a senior (indoor mile, and outdoor 800 and 1,500). His double championship wins at the 2011 outdoor meet came over a span of 90 minutes. Guarino was a five-time All SUNYAC team member and a two-time winner of the SUNYAC's Dr. Sam Molnar Award (2010, 2011). He was also the 2011 SUNYAC Chancellor's Award winner in men's track and field and a 2018 inductee into the Fredonia Athletics Hall of Fame. Guarino graduated with a degree in computer information systems with a concentration in systems management.

SUNYAC Men's Track & Field Coach of the Decade - Steve Patrick, Cortland
Patrick is in his 14th year as the Cortland men's and women's track and field head coach. Over the last decade he was honored as the SUNYAC Men's Outdoor Coach of the Year four times (2012, 2013, 2016, 2017) and was named the SUNYAC Men's Indoor Coach of the Year in 2016. Patrick was the 2012 and 2013 Atlantic Region Outdoor Coach of the Year and two-time the 2016 and 2017 Indoor Coach of the Year. His team was tied for fifth nationally outdoors in 2017 and tied for 10th in 2016. Under Patrick's leadership the Red Dragons scored at outdoor nationals in nine of the 10 years, while indoors the team was ninth nationally in 2017 and scored at nationals in eight of the 10 years. Patrick led his teams to four SUNYAC outdoor titles (2012, 2013, 2016, 2017) and finished second five times. During the indoor season his team won the 2016 title and finished second six times (team was never worse than third during the decade either indoors or outdoors). Patrick's team won the 2013 ECAC indoor title, tied for second in 2015 and was fourth in 2017. In the outdoor season, his team was third at the 2019 AARTFC championships and fourth in 2018, and was also fourth at 2013 ECAC championships. In the last 10-years, Patrick's athletes earned a total of 27 All-America honors in individual events, plus two in relays (14 individual, one relay indoors, 13 individual, one relay outdoors) Those All-Americans included three national champions (Jack Flood indoor heptathlon and outdoor decathlon in 2017, Nick Vachon outdoor high jump in 2016), three national runners-up (Melique Garcia indoor 200-meter dash in 2015, Mitch Couch outdoor hammer throw in 2017, Micah Assibey-Bonsu indoor triple jump in 2019), and four third-place finishers.
