Van Dorn, Groat earn second Softball Pitcher and Athlete of the Week honors this season

Cortland, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has selected its Softball Pitcher and Athlete of the Week awards for this week. Cortland's Sam Van Dorn repeats as Pitcher of the Week, and Plattsburgh's Jennifer Groat earns her second Athlete of the Week honor this season.

In a 1-2 weekend for the Red Dragons, Van Dorn turned in two solid starts. She recorded five strikeouts and only one earned run in an eight-inning heartbreaker against King's College. The junior then threw a combined seven innings in a split against Oswego, giving up only one earned run in both games and striking out seven combined. In a total of 15 and a third innings over three appearances, she allowed 12 hits and seven walks, struck out 12, and gave up only two earned runs for a 0.91 ERA.

Groat hit .636 (7-for-11) with four runs scored, three RBI, two doubles and a stolen base in a 3-1 week for the Cardinals. She batted 2-for-3 with one run scored and an RBI in a 5-4 come-from-behind win over Brockport in game one of a doubleheader on Friday. She then went 2-for-4 in a 6-0 victory over the Golden Eagles in the nightcap. On Saturday, she hit 2-for-2 with one run scored, a double and a triple in a 5-3 triumph over Geneseo in game one of a twinbill, before going 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a double in an 8-6 loss to the Knights in the nightcap.
