Cortland and Oswego capture weekly awards for softball

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has selected its weekly awards for softball. Cortland's Kelly O'Gorman has been selected as Athlete of the Week, and Oswego's Rebecca Vilchez has been selected as Pitcher of the Week.

O'Gorman batted .588 (10-for-17) with three doubles, two triples, two walks, four steals and nine runs scored in a 4-1 week for Cortland as it secured the second seed for the SUNYAC tournament. The sophomore outfielder tripled and scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth in a 4-3 win over Plattsburgh on Monday. She finished 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI and three runs in a 12-0 win at Buffalo State and was 3-for-3 with a triple, double, walk and three runs in a 10-5 victory at Fredonia. Cortland will face fifth seeded Plattsburgh in the first game of the SUNYAC Championship at Geneseo on Thursday.

Vilchez dominated her opponents to record an ERA of just 0.28 in five appearances. Vilchez only allowed one earned run over 25 strong innings of work, while striking out 13 of the batters she faced. The sophomore, who leads the conference with 14 wins this season, picked up four wins in her outings. While on the mound, Vilchez recorded a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage and notched 16 assists. On the offensive side, Vilchez also hit .364 over six games and recorded one home run. The fourth seeded Lakers will face number three seeded Oneonta this Thursday at the SUNYAC Championship.
