New Paltz sweeps final SUNYAC Softball Weekly Honors

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has selected New Paltz teammates Emily Fox (Commack, N.Y.) as the Softball Pitcher of the Week and Nina Simms (Hopewell Junction, N.Y) as the Athlete of the Week. 

Fox added three more strong outings to her breakout season this past week, going 3-1 in four starts. She gave up just five earned runs over the course of 25.1 innings pitched this week, while recording 26 strikeouts and registering a 1.38 ERA. In a 7-1 win over SUNY Potsdam, Fox gave up just six hits and no earned runs with eight strikeouts, while pitching all seven innings. In a 12-1 win over Fredonia, Fox again went the complete game, recording six strikeouts in just five innings pitched, while giving up just three hits. She concluded the weekend with another seven-inning complete game victory over Buffalo State. She allowed just seven hits, three earned runs and two walks with seven strikeouts in a 12-5 victory.

Simms batted .615 with 16 hits in 26 at-bats to help SUNY New Paltz clinch a SUNYAC playoff spot, while going 6-2 over the past week. She hit her first career home run in a 7-1 win over SUNY Potsdam and then backed up her performance by going 3-for-3 in a 6-4 win the next day against Plattsburgh. Simms had seven multi-hit games over the Hawks' last eight-game stretch, while leading the team with nine RBIs and eight runs scored. In 26 at-bats she only struck out twice, while earning three walks and a stolen base. In her first action in the field all season, she produced an .833 fielding percentage while making some highlight catches in left field against SUNY Potsdam.
