Sarah Cartmill is the new head coach of women's basketball for the Fredonia Blue Devils, an appointment announced today by Director of Athletics Jerry Fisk.

"I am excited," Fisk said, "to have Sarah join our staff and lead our women's basketball program. It was evident from her time on campus, and throughout the entire search process, that she has a passion for basketball and working with student-athletes. Sarah's demonstrated commitment to excellence, both on and off the court, will further enhance the student-athlete experience and positively impact the culture of Fredonia women's basketball."

Cartmill succeeds Linda Hill-MacDonald, who coached the Blue Devils for the past five seasons prior to leaving Fredonia in May to become an assistant coach at Canisius College.

"It is an honor," Cartmill said, "to be selected as the next women's basketball coach at Fredonia. I am humbled and excited about the opportunity. I cannot wait to get started working with this talented group of young women and join the Blue Devil family. I am looking forward to building relationships in the Fredonia community and creating a culture of competitiveness, grit and success, both on and off the court."

Following a successful playing career at Binghamton University, where she is a member of the college's athletics Hall of Fame, Cartmill played overseas in Ireland and Denmark and simultaneously began coaching school and club teams in both countries. She returned stateside in 2005 and served one season as a graduate assistant at Ithaca College, followed by four seasons as an assistant coach at St. Bonaventure. She returned to her alma mater in 2010 and spent four seasons there as an assistant coach, the last two doubling as the team's recruiting coordinator.

In August 2014, Cartmill was named head women's basketball coach and assistant athletic director at Bard College in Annandale, N.Y. She left there last June and served the past year as assistant coach at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y.

Cartmill earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Binghamton and a Master of Science in Exercise and Sports Sciences, with a concentration in sports psychology, from Ithaca College. Her resume includes service on the staff of several basketball camps and clinics as well as a spot on the NCAA Division III East Region Advisory Committee. She served as a site representative for NCAA first-round games in 2016 and 2017.

"I would like to express my gratitude," Cartmill said, "to Jerry Fisk and the hiring/search committee for putting their faith in me to help lead this program."

Fisk echoed the new coach's sentiments. "I would like to thank the search committee," he said, "for their efforts to bring such an outstanding young coach into the fold at Fredonia."
