Leonard and Maby Take SUNYAC Men's Wrestling Weekly Honors
SYRACUSE, N.Y – Oneonta teammates Avery Leonard and Jackson Maby repeat as the SUNYAC Men's Wrestler of the Week and the Wrestling Rookie of the Week respectively.
Leonard finished 3-0 with three tech falls to win the 149 lbs. open division at the New York State Collegiate Championships and was voted the open division's Most Outstanding Wrestler at the tournament. He started the event with a 17-2 tech fall in 3:34 against Albany's Sean Romanski, then advanced to the finals with a 17-1 tech fall in 3:53. Leonard faced Hofstra's (unattached) Dylan Zenion in the first-place match and won with a 19-3 tech fall in 4:32. The junior's performance helped Oneonta win the State Championship team title.
Maby went 4-0 with three falls and a tech fall to win the freshman/sophomore 141 lbs. class at the New York State Collegiate Championship Open. He recorded three straight first round pins in 1:27, 0:54, and 2:25 to advance to the first-place match. The freshman faced Ithaca's William Bentrim in the finals and defeated Bentrim with a 15-0 tech fall. Maby's performance helped Oneonta secure the team title at the State Championships.
