Cortland and Oneonta women's soccer advance to semifinals

Cortland and Oneonta advance to the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) women's soccer semifinals after winning first round games Saturday. Cortland beat Brockport, 3-0, at home while Oneonta upset Potsdam, 2-1, in double overtime on the road.

The Cortland and Brockport game was scoreless until less than a minute into the second half when Brenna Conover (Smithtown, N.Y.) put the ball in the back of the net on a penalty kick for the Red Dragons. Freshman Alannah O'Shea (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) scored her first and second career goals to make it, 3-0. Those two goals were assisted by Erin Valente (Latham, N.Y.) and Sam Barringer (Clifton Park, N.Y.) respectively.

In the other first round game Saturday, Potsdam's Lexi Dean (Schenectady, N.Y.) scored first off an assist from Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y.). Oneonta's Micaela Honsinger (New Hartford, N.Y.) tied it up just over 12 minutes later. The score would remained 1-1 through two periods of overtime. Jess Dowin (Franklin, N.Y.) scored the game winning goal unassisted to upset the Bears at home.  Melissa Muller (Holbrook, N.Y.) had four saves in goal for the Red Dragons while Delphine Leonard (Montreal, Quebec) recorded seven saves for the Bears in the 108 minutes of play.

Oneonta will travel to face top seeded Geneseo while Cortland will play second seeded Plattsburgh Wednesday, November 1. Both games will kick off at 1 p.m.

Brockport and Potsdam ended the 2017 season Saturday with loses in the first round. The Golden Eagles finished with an overall record of 9-7-2 while the Bears finished 12-6-2.
