Cortland Women's Soccer Fall to #13 Tufts, 3-1, in NCAA First Round

EWING, N.J. – The nationally 13th-ranked Tufts women's soccer team scored two second-half goals to break a 1-1 tie and defeated Cortland, 3-1, Saturday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Div. III playoffs at Ewing, N.J. The Red Dragons wrapped up their season at 12-6-2, while the Jumbos improved to 13-3-2 and advanced to the second round to face The College of New Jersey.

Freshman Sabrina Rodrigues (West Hempstead) scored her third goal of the season for Cortland. Junior Alannah O'Shea (New Hyde Park/Herricks) recorded an assist. Junior goalie Danika Svendsen (Stillwater) made nine saves to finish with 104 on the season.

Sophie Lloyd, Madeleine Pero and Sarah Maloney each netted goals for Tufts. Liz Reed registered two assosts, and Lily Sykes picked up one assist. Goalie Hayley Bernstein turned aside three shots.

Lloyd gave Tufts a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute, scoring on a rebound after a Svendsen save of Sykes' shot. Rodrigues evened the score 42 seconds before the half, taking a long through ball from O'Shea and ringing a shot off the left post and in the goal.

Pero scored the game winner in the 55th minute with a 16-yard shot, and Maloney added an insurance goal in the 70th minute with a header off a corner kick. Cortland managed just one more shot over the final 20 minutes as the Jumbos claimed the 3-1 win.
