SUNYAC Tennis Championship Results; Day 1

BINGHAMTION, N.Y. – The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tennis Championships kicked off Saturday at the Binghamton Tennis Center. Competition will continue with semifinals on Sunday and the championship match on Monday.

In the first match of the day, #1 East New Paltz defeated #4 West Oswego, 5-0. The Hawks swept the doubles matches to earn three team points. Brittany Grandville and Carol Tyson continued on to win their singles matches adding two more team points to help New Paltz earn the five points needed in championship play.

The third-seed in the East, Plattsburgh topped the second-seed in the West, Fredonia in the second match of the day, 5-2. Plattsburgh jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Fredonia's second doubles team of Halee Dickinson and Choloe Cohen gave the Blue Devils its first team point winning 8-3. Plattsburgh's Kelci Henn, Sarah Drexinger and Sierra Barrett won their singles matches to capture the team win.

Oneonta started off with a 3-0 lead including a doubles forfeit due to a Brockport player injury. The Red Dragons, seeded second in the East, also gained another team point in singles play with a sixth singles forfeit. Brockport's Sarah Mensah earned the Golden Eagles lone team point with a win at first singles (6-0, 6-0). Oneonta's Kayla Houle won fifth singles (6-0, 6-1) to take the match 5-1.

In the fourth and final match of the night, top-seed in the West, Geneseo held on to all three doubles matches as Cortland fought to 8-5 in both first and third doubles. The Knights won their next two team points in second and fourth singles for the 5-0 win.

Sunday the consolation matches will begin at 8 a.m. with Oswego facing Fredonia and Brockport taking on Cortland.

New Paltz will play Plattsburgh at noon in the first semifinal of the day while Geneseo will match up against Oneonta at 2:30 p.m.
