Brockport wins third consecutive SUNYAC volleyball title

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The gym was filled with energy from the athletes and fans as the top seed, Brockport Golden Eagles, defeated the second seed, Fredonia Blue Devils, 3-0, in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) volleyball championship match, Saturday in Brockport. With their eighth overall SUNYAC championship win, the Golden Eagles earned an automatic berth into the NCAA tournament.

Set one started out pretty even as the teams traded the first few points back and forth. Brockport began to pull away and Fredonia was forced to call their first timeout, down 8-4. The timeout didn't do too much to slow down the momentum of the Golden Eagles as they extended their lead to 17-9 causing head coach, Geoff Braun to call his second timeout. Brockport never let up and they never looked back as they took the first set 25-16 and a 1-0 match lead.

Brockport kept up their momentum from the first set and jumped out to an 8-3 lead by the time the Blue Devils called their first timeout of set two. The Golden Eagles would continue to pile on to their lead, going up as much as eight points, leading 13-5 at one point in the set. Fredonia, however, was able to climb back into the set bringing the score to 14-10 before the Golden Eagles stepped back on the gas pedal and caused the Blue Devils to take their second timeout of the set, trailing 17-11. Fredonia valiantly battled their way back into this set forcing the Golden Eagles to call a timeout with the score, 24-21, and again after a second timeout tying the score at 24. Brockport took the next two points after play resumed and Fredonia came up just short in their comeback effort as the Golden Eagles were able to squeeze out the second set victory, 26-24.

It seemed like even though they dropped the second set; things started clicking for the Blue Devils in the third as they scored four unanswered points to begin the set. Brockport would eventually tie the set up at seven and teams began to trade points back and forth again until the Golden Eagles would take a 14-11 lead as Fredonia called their first timeout of the set. Brockport scored four unanswered points after the timeout and Fredonia was forced to call their second timeout down 18-11. The Blue Devils were no match for the Golden Eagles in the final set as Brockport took the set 25-16 and the match 3-0.
