Moran, Simmons picked as Women's Volleyball Athletes of the Week

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has selected the recipients for its weekly women's volleyball awards. Cortland sophomore Bridgette Moran has been picked as the Offensive Athlete of the Week, while Plattsburgh sophomore Michelle Simmons is the Defensive Athlete of the Week.

Moran averaged 2.5 kills and 0.8 blocks per set and had a .406 attack percentage in a 2-2 week for the Red Dragons. She opened with seven kills and a .385 attack percentage in a loss to nationally ranked Ithaca Wednesday. She then had a combined 28 kills and 10 blocks and a .411 attack percentage in three matches during the Cortland Invitational, including 11 kills and three blocks in a four-set win over Morrisville, 10 kills and six blocks in a four-set loss to RIT, and seven kills and a .545 attack percentage in a three-set win over Wilkes.

Simmons averaged 1.55 blocks per set and was named to the Skidmore Classic All-Tournament Team in a 2-1 week for the Cardinals. She also hit .348 for the week on 29 kills and five errors in 69 total attempts. Simmons posted five blocks on Friday night, helping Plattsburgh State down Norwich University, 3-1. On Saturday, she had three blocks and three digs in a 3-0 loss to St. John Fisher College before recording a career-high nine blocks (three solo, six assist) in a 3-1 victory over the College of New Rochelle. For the season, she ranks third in the SUNYAC in blocks per set (0.80) in addition to holding the SUNYAC lead in hitting percentage (.355).
