SUNY New Paltz Baseball Ends Three-Game Opening Weekend With 10-2 Loss Against Stevens

HOBOKEN, NJ —In the final leg of a three-game weekend, the State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team fell to Stevens Institute of Technology 10-2 on Sunday. The loss put the Hawks at a record of 1-2 on the season. Nick Zangara started the game for the SUNY New Paltz and pitched 3.2 innings allowing seven hits and seven runs. The freshman struck out four batters in his first career start.

After the Hawks were retired in order in the top of the first, the Ducks got the scoring started in the bottom of the first. Thomas Paulich drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single. Two batters later, Stevens extended its lead to three when Gannon Kenney-McGowan sent a two-run home run to right field.

"We didn't get off to a great start on the mound like we did yesterday, but Zangara was able to settle down and have a decent first collegiate outing," SUNY New Paltz coach Thomas Seay said. "Offensively we just haven't shown the ability to have a consistent approach at the plate and make in-game adjustments. We are going to have to do those things offensively to help out our young pitching staff."

The Hawks battled back in the top of the fourth. Dean Stalzer started the inning with a single up the left side. After a walk, two fielder's choice plays, and a Michael Boccarossa RBI single, SUNY New Paltz trailed by just one run.

baseballHowever, the Ducks came up big in the bottom of the fourth, scoring five runs. Zangara nearly worked himself out of a 'second and third with one out' jam, but after striking out Chris Davis for the second out, AJ Falconite squeezed a single up the left side to drive in two runs.

Matt Triebel came in to pitch for the Hawks and gave up a three run homer to Paulich that extended the Duck lead to six runs.

"We started to get things going in the fourth and get the game back to a manageable score," Seay said. "But we weren't able to put a zero on the board the next half inning. In that situation we really needed to have a shut-down inning to get more momentum."

Stevens tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 10-2 and put the game out of reach for SUNY New Paltz. Julian Francisco went 2-for-4 and scored a run for the Hawks, while Jesse Keshner went 1-for-2 with two walks.

The Hawks will get back on the road and head to Pennsylvania on Wednesday to take on Scranton at 4 p.m.

"The focus for Wednesday is to get our offense going," Seay said. "We'll spend Tuesday focusing on the offensive part of the game, and hopefully that will jump start our bats. It's still early in the year so we aren't going to press."
