Men’s Ice Hockey Falls to Buffalo State, 6-1

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey outshot Buffalo State, 36-28, but the Cardinals fell to the Bengals, 6-1, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Saturday night at the Buffalo State Ice Arena.

Plattsburgh State (6-13-3, 3-8-2 SUNYAC) next plays at SUNYAC foe SUNY Potsdam at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15. Buffalo State (11-8-2, 7-4-1 SUNYAC) plays a conference game at SUNY Geneseo on Friday, Feb. 14, at 7 p.m.

In the first period of play, Plattsburgh State held an 11-8 edge in shots on goal, but the Cardinals were outscored by the Bengals, 2-1.

Charles Barber put Buffalo State in front, 1-0, at 9:39 of the first period. Barber passed the puck to a teammate below the goal line to the left of the Plattsburgh State net. Barber then skated toward the Plattsburgh State net and got a return pass, before finishing with a shot through the five-hole. Nikita Kozyrev and Zach Remers were credited with the assists.

Under three minutes later, senior forward and alternate captain Joe Drabin (Rochester, N.Y./Wenatchee Wild) answered for Plattsburgh State to tie the game at 1-1. Freshman forward Adam Tretowicz (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres) played a pass from behind the Buffalo State net to Drabin, who was at the goal line to the right of the net. Drabin then skated backwards to the left side of the right circle, before scoring with a wrist shot into the upper-left corner of the goal at 12:11 of the first period. Tretowicz and Freshman forward Mitchell Hale (Oakfield, N.Y./ Johnstown Tomahawks) garnered the assists on Drabin's fifth goal of the season.

The score remained 1-1 until 16:10 of the first period when Cody Symonds scored to put Buffalo State in front, 2-1. An initial Buffalo State shot taken from the top of the left circle was kicked away by Plattsburgh State's sophomore goaltender Brandon Wells (Spirit River, Alberta/Melville Millionaires) (0-3-0), but Symonds got to the rebound first and scored before Wells could react. Kozyrev and Remers assisted on the play.

Plattsburgh State kept the score at 2-1 until 17:06 of the second period when Vadim Vasjonkin scored to increase the Buffalo State lead to 3-1. Troy Button sent a cross-ice pass from just outside the top of the right circle to Vasjonkin below the left face-off dot. Vasjonkin quickly released a wrist shot before the goaltender could get over to cover the left side of the net. Button and Parker Allison tallied the assists.

Buffalo State scored three goals in the third period to pull away from Plattsburgh State and make the final score 6-1.

After a Cardinal turnover by the goal line to the right of the Plattsburgh State net, Sam Maddox found Jon Colley in the slot and Colley scored on a wrist shot high to the stick side. Colley's goal increased Buffalo State's lead to 4-1 at 7:53 of the third period.

The Bengals struck again less than a minute later when Remers scored at the 8:33 mark. Remers took a pass from Kozyrev at the left side of the Plattsburgh State crease, skated across the front of the net, and lifted a wrist shot over the goaltender's left pad to make the score 5-1. Kozyrev and Vasjonkin garnered the assists.

Plattsburgh State pulled its goalie for an extra skater late in the game, but A.J. Marinelli scored an empty-net goal, assisted by Matt Miberva, at 17:43 of the third period to make the final score 6-1 in favor of Buffalo State.

Wells made 22 saves for Plattsburgh State and Emil Norrman (6-4-0) stopped 35 shots for Buffalo State.

The Cardinals finished 0-of-2 on the power play and Buffalo State went 0-of-5.
