RC Splits at Baltimore Invitational; Tops No. 7 Cortland 9-0

Game 1

The Lead:  Marietta scored a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to walk-off with a 6-5 win over Roanoke at the Baltimore Invitational.  

How it Happened

  • Roanoke loaded the bases in the top of the second inning and scored a pair of runs on a Gavin Kandrick RBI single that scored Carter Plunkett and Matt Wojciechowski to make it 2-0. 
  • With the bases loaded in the Marietta fourth inning, Rodreco Rache singled home Logan Vietmeier to make it 2-1 and Drew Wilkinson followed with an RBI groundout to tie the game 2-2.
  • The following inning, an Seamus Kenneally RBI single scored a pair of runs to put Marietta up 4-2. Later in the inning, the Pioneers took advantage of an RC error to make it a 5-2.
  • The score stayed that way until the top of the ninth inning when Wojciechowski doubled to open the inning and moved to third on a Kandrick single. Mason Staz followed with a single to score Wojciechowski to cut the Marietta lead to 5-3.
  • Hunter Andrews then singled to load the bases, then with two outs Will Salva singled to score pinch-runner Tyler De Meo and Staz to tie the game at 5-5.
  • In the decisive bottom of the ninth inning, Drew Holderbach was hit by a pitch with one and moved to third on a Brady Cottom single. Kenneally then drove in Holderbach on a fielder's choice to give Marietta the win.

The Lead: A seven run sixth inning propelled Roanoke to a 9-0 victory over No. 7 Cortland in RC's second game at the Baltimore Invitational.

How it Happened

  • Roanoke got the only run it would need in the bottom of the fourth inning when it loaded the bases with no outs and Sam Watson delivered a sacrifice to score Plunkett and make it 1-0.
  • RC loaded the bases with again with no outs in the sixth and Watson singled to score Salva to extended the Maroons lead to 2-0.
  • A PK Cocolis  RBI single made it 3-0 before Will Merriken doubled and plated Watson and Carson McCusker and gave RC a 5-0 lead.
  • Later in the inning, Cocolis scored on a Cortland error to make it 6-0 and a bases loaded walk to Salva pushed the lead to 7-0. The inning was capped by a Plunkett RBI single to score Andrews.
  • A sacrifice fly off the bat of Plunkett in the eighth inning scored Staz to provide the final run for the Maroons.
  • Three Maroon pitchers combined to allow just six hits on the day. Danny Checkosky went 7.1 innings, giving up just four hits and struck out four to improve to 1-0 on the year.
  • Zack Durant fell to 1-2 on the year after going five innings and giving up four runs Cortland.
  • Watson, Plunkett and Cocolis each had two hits in the win.
