Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cortland Makes 20 Threes, Fitzpatrick Ties Assist Record, in Rout of Cabrini

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland made 20 of its 3-point attempts and Brendan Fitzpatrick (Plainview/Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK) tied a school single-game mark with 12 assists as the Red Dragons cruised past visiting Cabrini University, 102-62, in a non-league matchup.

Cortland (7-2) finished 20-for-41 from 3-point range. The 20 treys are the second-most in school history, one shy of the school-record 21 the Red Dragons hit last season in a win at New Paltz. Ryan Schmadel (Oriskany) connected on 6-of-12 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 18 points along with three assists.

Ben Walters (Lockport/Starpoint) scored 17 points with three 3-pointers and Jake DiSanto (Victor) nailed four 3-pointers and ended with a career-high tying 16 points.

Austin Grunder (Trumansburg/Charles O. Dickerson) scored 17 points and pulled down a career-high 23 rebounds. He made two 3-pointers, and his 23 boards are three shy of the school single-game record and tied for the third-highest total by a Division III player this year. Grunder entered the game as the Division III national rebounding leader with 15.6 per game.

Fitzpatrick recorded 10 points and four rebounds in addition to his 12 assists. He's the fourth player in school history to dish out 12 assists in a game as he joins Jay Crosier (1991-92 vs. Utica/Rome), Jason Thomas (1993-94 vs. Staten Island) and Derrick Fish (2007-08 vs. Morrisville State) in the school record book.

Also for the Red Dragons, Endher Gonzalez (Brooklyn/Prospect Heights) finished with six points and a career-high tying eight rebounds and Kareem Lubin (South Blooming Grove/Washingtonville) set career highs with six points and six rebounds.

Voshon Mack led Cabrini (3-9) with 22 points on 10-of-16 shooting and also pulled down five rebounds. Keith Blassingale had 14 points and eight assists and Brice Parks and Ryan Byars led the Cavaliers with six rebounds each.

The teams were tied 13-13 with 13:25 left in the first half before Cortland went on a 13-1 run in about two and a half minutes to take a 26-14 lead. Fitzpatrick, DiSanto and Walters all hit 3-pointers during that stretch. The Red Dragons used a 17-2 run later in the half to take a 46-21 lead and Cortland led 54-27 at halftime. Cortland led by at least 23 points the entire second half.

Cortland will host Buffalo State on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Fredonia on Saturday at 4 p.m. in SUNYAC games.
