Golden Eagles upend Bears in home opener

Results

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The SUNY Potsdam men's and women's swimming and diving teams both fell to the College at Brockport in the Bears home opener on Saturday afternoon.  Potsdam's women fell to the Golden Eagles 184-103 and the men fell 190-103. 
 
The Bears women started off aggressive early with a win in the Women's 400 Medley Relay with a team up of senior captain Iris Curtis (Lewiston, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield), senior captain Allison Medley (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown), junior Cassandra Hunter (Castleton, N.Y./Maple Hill) and senior Samantha Coombs (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-Dewitt) with a time of 4:19.9. Junior Emily Pitz (Lagrangeville, N.Y./Millbrook) took second in the Women's 1000 Freestyle (12:32.55). Coombs then won the Women's 200 Freestyle (2:05.65) and the 50 Freestyle (25.87). Curtis swam away with a close second in the 100 Backstroke (1:04.47). Pitz won the 200 Butterfly with a time of 2:28.54. Coombs claimed a third victory in the 100 Free (55.98). Medley placed second in the 200 Breaststroke (2:42.16) and in the 100 Breaststroke (1:14.66).
 
The Bears men captured the 400 Medley Relay with the team consisting of sophomore Nate Young (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City), junior Ryan Hagadorn (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee), junior Andrew McEwen (Macedon, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) and junior captain William Stephens III (Medina, N.Y./Medina) with a time of 3:52.34. Junior Cody Cole (Watkins Glen, N.Y./ Watkins Glen) took second in the 1000 Free (11:27.35), while junior Nicholas Haines (Middletown, N.Y./Middletown) came in second in the 200 Free (1:56.59) and the 500 Free (5:20.24). Hagadorn claimed two first place victories in the 100 Backstroke (1:03.16) and the 200 Backstroke (2:22.10). McEwen won the 50 Free (23.71). Stephens was second in the 100 Free (52.66). Junior Ivan Nietopski (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville North) placed second in the 200 Butterfly as the lone Potsdam swimmer (2:24.21). McEwen capped his day with second place in the 100 Butterfly (58.71). Young was second in the 100 Backstroke (1:02.17). Hagadorn narrowly missed a win in the 200 IM with a runner up time of 2:10.93.  Junior Zack Martin (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) teamed with McEwen, Haines and Stephens for second place in the 400 Freestyle Relay (3:38.15). 
 
The Bears are back in action November 22 and 23, when they host the North Country Invitational at 4 p.m. and 10 a.m., respectively.
