Devils drop road game

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The Fredonia State women's basketball team was not able to take advantage of an off night of shooting by New Paltz, falling to the Hawks, 53-40, on Saturday. Lauren Mickley led the Devils with 12 points, and Anna Chiacchia had 11 points and four assists. Heaven Rolleck had nine rebounds.

New Paltz shot 4-of-33 from three-point range, and 23 percent from the floor overall. The Devils were unable to muster up enough offense to come up with the win, shooting 33 percent (18-of-55) from the field, and 2-of-19 from long range.

New Paltz jumped out to an early 12-2 lead, and would maintain that lead at the end of one quarter, leading 20-10. By the half, they would expand the lead to 14 points, taking a 33-19 lead into the locker room.

Fredonia State closed the gap in the third. The Hawk's Paige Niemeyer scored the first four points of the third before the Devils started their rally.

With New Paltz leading 37-19, the Devils went on a 12-2 run to make it an eight-point game, 39-31, with just over two minutes remaining in the quarter.

The fourth quarter opened with New Paltz leading 40-31. The Devils stepped up for a 7-2 run that cut the lead to just four points at the 5:54 mark.

However, Fredonia State would score just one more basket the rest of the game while the Hawks scored 11 over that same span to provide the final count.

New Paltz held a significant advantage at the free-throw line, going 15-of-19, while the Devils shot 2-of-3. The Hawks also won the turnover battle, committing nine compared to Fredonia State's 24.

The Devils outrebounded the hosts, 46-44.
 
New Paltz (8-1 SUNYAC / 13-3 overall) was led by Marion Dietz with 15 points, and Niemeyer had 12. They maintained a hold on second place in the conference, trailing Cortland who remained undefeated in SUNYAC play.

The Devils fall to 2-6 in conference play and 6-9 overall.
