Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball open season with victory at Skidmore

Three players reach double figures

A Quick Look
Three players scored in double figures, as the SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team opened its 2019-20 season with a 59-49 victory at Skidmore.

The Inside Story
The Red Dragons broke the game wide open in the third quarter, outscoring the Thoroughbreds 20-9.  With the score tied at 35 apiece with 3:37 remaining in the quarter, Oneonta scored 12 unanswered points to pull away entering the final quarter.

Senior Alexa Amalbert (Nanuet/Nanuet) got things started with a pair of free throws to break the tie.  Classmate Leanne Corso (Commack/Commack) then buried a three-pointer to give Oneonta a five-point lead one-minute later.  After a layup from senior Casey Hayes (New Hyde Park/Sewanhaka), Amalbert drilled a three with 1:01 left to push the lead to 10 points.  Freshman Olivia Dobrovosky (Skaneateles/Skaneateles) capped the scoring in the quarter with a layup with 12 seconds left.

Dobrovosky opened the fourth quarter with a three before classmate Lauren Obermayer (East Greenbush/East Greenbush) made a layup off a Dobrovosky steal.  Oneonta's run came to a close at 17 points and essentially put the game out of reach for Skidmore.

The Thoroughbreds made a final push closing its deficit to six points with just under three minutes to go, but Oneonta converted five free throws down the stretch while Skidmore went cold from the field managing only one point during the final stretch.

Oneonta trailed for a brief time in the opening quarter before Hayes and Amalbert scored five quick points to give the Red Dragons the lead for good.  Oneonta led 13-11 at the end of the first quarter and held a slim 27-26 lead heading into halftime.

Just the Stats
Amalbert led all scorers in the game with 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting including 3-of-5 from behind the arc.  Hayes and Dobrovosky each scored 13 points to round out Oneonta's double-figure scorers.  Dobrovosky was a starter today in her first collegiate game while Hayes came off the bench to score her points.  Hayes also grabbed seven boards as did Corso to lead everyone.

What's Next
Oneonta will travel to Vassar College to participate in their tournament next weekend.  Oneonta will face Worcester State on Friday night at 7:30pm.
