Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Defense Leads Women's Hoops Past Oneonta

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.– Eastern University Women's Basketball used stifling second-half defense to pull away to a 70-51 win over the SUNY-Oneonta RedDragons in the consolation game of Vassar's tip-off tournament. Minika Glenn scored 13 of her game-high 20 points after the intermission to lead the Eagles.

How It Happened:
Trailing 37-34 at half, the Eagles looked to extend pressure up the court in the second half. While the defense was effective early, the Eagles (2-2) did not get the offense going until late in the third. MaryKate McLaughlin put the Eagles up for good at 40-39 over six minutes into the half.

Glenn then converted a three-point play. After shooting just two first-half free throws, the Eagles got to the line 11 times in the third period and closed out the frame on a 15-4 run. McLaughlin scored all five of her points in the critical period.

Up 50-43 headed to the fourth, the Eagles put the game away with an 13-0 run over the first four and a half minutes of the fourth. Naomi Harris started the period with a jumper and Glenn scored twice b before Viki Knees hit a pair of free throws. The Eagle scored the final five points of the burst directly off steals. Naomi Harris made a lay-up after a steal from Glenn and Da"Naziah Brown buried a 3-pointer off a Brynn Schmidt steal.

The 36-14 edge in the second half came as the Eagles forced 12 turnovers and held the Red Dragons to 18 percent shooting,

Naomi Harris finished with 11 points and five rebounds. Jaelyn Harris had ten points and five rebounds. Brown had eight points, nine rebounds, four assists, and three steals.

Glenn added six rebounds and three steals to her 20 points and was named to the All-Tournament team.

Coach Houston Says:
"We talked about character and buying in at halftime. We put together a lot of key stops and the press worked very well for us in the second half. It was good for us to get some momentum going into a big test next week."

Up Next:
