Cortland slips past Women’s Soccer in overtime, 2-1

CORTLAND, N.Y.— Cortland tallied the game-winner with just over three minutes remaining in the first overtime to capture a 2-1 victory over visiting Buffalo State in a SUNYAC contest this afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Buffalo State and Cortland matched each other shot-for-shot in the first half, but each team failed to break through as the score remained level at halftime.
  • The Bengals finally broke the deadlock as Erin Valente (Latham/Shaker) scored her fifth goal of the season on a rebound shot, off an assist from Allie Reeds (E. Amherst/Williamsville South), in the 51st minute to give Buffalo State a 1-0 lead.
  • The Red Dragons evened the score, just under three minutes later, on a rebound shot with an open goal.
  • Each team had scoring opportunities late, but neither team produced another goal before the end of regulation to force overtime.
  • Cortland was the aggressor early in the extra session, including a shot and two corners in the first three minutes, and capitalized with the game-winning goal in the 97th minute.
  • Taylor Carillo (Pine Bush/Pine Bush) finished with six saves in net for the Bengals.
  • The Red Dragons finished with a 15-6 shot advantage with an 8-3 edge in shots-on-goal.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Jayden Kelley scored the overtime marker, while Jaden Galluzzo also scored.
  • Danika Svendsen registered a pair of saves in net for the Red Dragons.
