Men’s Ice Hockey Suffers 5-0 Setback to Fredonia

FREDONIA, N.Y. — Plattsburgh State Men's Ice hockey suffered a 5-0 setback to Fredonia in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Friday night at Steele Hall Ice Arena.

Plattsburgh State (6-12-3, 3-7-2 SUNYAC) next plays at SUNYAC foe Buffalo State tomorrow at 7 p.m., while Fredonia hosts SUNY Potsdam for a conference game tomorrow at 7 p.m.

Fredonia scored one goal in the first period, two goals in the second period and two goals in the third period.

Jasper Korican-Barlay scored his first goal of the game, assisted by Anders Johnson and Craig McCabe at 3:20 of the first period. After an initial shot by Johnson from just outside the top of the left circle was stopped, Korican-Barlay put in a rebound from in front of the Plattsburgh State net to make the score 1-0.

The score remained 1-0 until 14:55 of the second period when Jacob Haynes tallied his 11th goal of the season with Victor Tracy assisting. A neutral-zone turnover led to a rush by Fredonia. Haynes got behind the Plattsburgh State defense and he finished with a wrist shot over the right shoulder of the Cardinal goaltender to make the score 2-0.

Frdonia increased its lead to 3-0 when Hugo Gamache scored his first goal of the season at 18:10 of the second period. The goal, which came two seconds after Plattsburgh State had returned to full strength, was assisted by Ryan Dunner and Tyler Riter. Gamache's goal came on a wrist shot from the high slot that found its way through traffic and passed a screened goaltender.

In the third period, Fredonia's final two goals came on the power play.

Korican-Barlay scored his second goal of the night and sixth of the season, assisted by Tracy and Charlie Manley at the 4:55 mark. An initial shot from outside the top of the right circle was saved, but the rebound bounced to Korican-Barlay near the left face-off dot and he fired a shot into the left side of the net before the goaltender could get over.

Then on a 5-on-3 power play, Fredonia's Tommy Martyn scored his third goal of the season on a slap shot from the left point that found the upper-right corner of the net at the 7:49 mark. Gamache and Bryce Witman assisted on the goal that made the final score 5-0 in favor of Fredonia.

Shots on goal were 33-33.

Plattsburgh State finished 0-of-5 on the power play and Fredonia was 2-of-6.

Junior goaltender Jimmy Poreda (Tonawanda, N.Y./Connecticut Jr. Rangers) (6-9-3) made 26 saves and allowed five goals in 48:36 of play. Sophomore Brandon Wells (Spirit River, Alberta/Melville Millionaires) stopped two shots in relief of Poreda. Anton Rosén (3-5-3) made 33 saves for Fredonia.
