Men’s Hockey drops opener against No. 14 Manhattanville, 5-2

BUFFALO, N.Y.—Buffalo State rebounded from an early two-goal deficit, but dropped a 5-2 decision against visiting No. 14 Manhattanville today in the opening round of Buffalo State Bengals Classic.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Manhattanville jumped opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal just 2:45 into the game and then pushed the lead to 2-0 just 44 seconds later. 
  • Buffalo State responded with a pair of quick goals itself, however to even the score.
  • Jon Colley (Stouffville, ON/Stouffville District) deflected a shot home just 47 seconds after the second Manhattanville goals, and Vadim Vasjonkin (Tallinn, Estonia) evened the score at the 6:16 mark.
  • The Valiants netted a pair of power-play goals in the second period, however, and then sealed the victory with an empty-net goal in the final minute.
  • Buffalo State finished with a 32-31 edge in shots.
  • Trevor Micucci (Hamburg, NY/Connections Acad.) made 26 saves in the loss.
  • Brendon Zack (Sarver, PA/Freeport Area), Connor Zak (Amherst, NY/Nichols), John Shively (Dundee, IL/Hampshire) and Reid Bibb (Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersburg) all drew assists for the Bengals.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Jarod Lavallee had two goals and an assist to lead Manhattanville.
  • Joel Knight and Alex Rowella had a goal and an assist apiece, and Ken McLean also scored.
  • Mac Vail finished with 30 saves.
 
THE OTHER GAME
  • No. 7-ranked Adrian raced past Nichols College 5-1 in the opening game of the Bengals Classic.
 
UP NEXT
Buffalo State will face Nichols College in tomorrow's consolation game, followed by No. 14 Manhattanville and No. 7 Adrian in the title game at 7 p.m.
