Purchase, NY – The SUNY Brockport baseball team split the doubleheader against Purchase College on Saturday, moving to 2-4 on the season. Brockport lost game one of the day, 6-10, and then won big in game two, 14-3.
First baseman
Ryan Voight was on fire at the plate in the doubleheader, rattling off six hits for seven RBI's.
Tom Kretzler also had a great day with the bat in his hands, registering five hits to bring in four RBI's for the Green and Gold.
Andrew Huffman (1-0) got the win on the rubber in the second game, striking out six in five innings of work.
Adam Douglas,
Ryan Greco, and
Dylan Steinman all pitching in relief during the doubleheader, combining for four strikeouts, four innings pitched, and zero earned runs allowed.
Game 1
Brandon Greenspan got the start on the mound for the first contest of the day. Purchase was able to manufacture two runs in the first inning to go up 2-0 early. Brockport scored an unearned run thanks to a fielding error to cut the lead to 2-1 in the second.
Purchase then scored its remaining eight runs of the contest, unanswered, from the third through the fifth inning of the game. The Golden Eagles bats woke up in the sixth, as they rallied to score five runs in the final two innings of the game. However, the comeback came up short with Purchase taking the 10-6 win in game one.
With just over two innings pitched,
Jason Hellwig (0-1) was given the losing decision on the mound for the Green and Gold. Ryan Kozersky (1-0) got the win for Purchase, pitching six innings of the contest.
Brockport would keep its offensive groove at the plate going into game two of the doubleheader.
Game 2
It was all Brockport right from the first inning, as the team jumped out to a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth. Purchase would score three runs in the fourth and fifth innings, but that would be all for the rest of the game.
The Golden Eagles left no doubt, tallying nine runs in the final two innings of the second game. They scored seven runs in the seventh inning alone, cruising to an 11-run victory. Seven different players recorded at least one RBI, as the team connected for 13 hits and only had one strike out at the plate.
Huffman got the win in game two for Brockport, while CJ Owens (0-2) received the loss on the mound for Purchase.
The Green and Gold are on the road again tomorrow for a single game down in Scranton, PA.
