BROCKPORT, NY – The SUNY Brockport men's lacrosse team netted seven second quarter goals -- and held visiting Alfred University to just one goal in the first half -- as the Golden Eagles earned a convincing 11-3 victory in the season opener at Bob Boozer Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Brockport junior
Brendan Halleran posted a career-high four goals and also added one assist to pace the Golden Eagles' high powered offense. Sophomore goalie
John Felice was equally as impressive as he stopped 15 shots in net for the Golden Eagles.
Owen VanWie added three points on two goals and one assist, while
Patrick Sheridan and
Rocco Santillo each added one goal and one assist for the home team.
Brockport topped the Saxons in their season opener for the second time in the last three seasons. The last time Alfred came to town, the Golden Eagles earned a narrow 7-6 victory.
Halleran got the home team on the board late in the first quarter as he netted his first of the year off an assist from
Michael Coletti. Alfred tied the game up at 1-1 early in the second quarter but it would not last as the Golden Eagles answered with 11 consecutive goals, including seven in the second quarter. All four of Halleran's goals came in the first half of action.
The Golden Eagles took the pedal off the offensive gas in the second half and Felice continued to come up clutch between the pipes to preserve the eight goal victory for the home team. His 15 saves against the Saxons were just two shy of his career-best and the three goals against were the lowest allowed in his career when logging a full 60 minute effort.
Sophomore
Aidan Fitzgerald registered a team-high five caused turnovers for Brockport and he also added a team-best eight ground balls. Both proved to be career-highs for the second year midfielder.
The Golden Eagles earned a 23-18 shot on goal advantage on the day. Gage Ponsetti made eight stops in net for the Saxons.
Senior

Liam O'Connor and
Peter Scavone also each registered one goal for the Golden Eagles. Paul Forte led Alfred with a team-high one goal and one assist.
Brockport's game at Clarkson on Saturday has been cancelled due to impending weather. The Golden Eagles will return to action on March 3
rd at 4 p.m. as they take on visiting Nazareth College.
