Women's Basketball Drops Non-Conference Game to Buffalo State

Bradford, Pa. -- Playing their 3rd game in 5 days, the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford women's basketball team was unable to overcome the high pressure defense of the Buffalo State on Wednesday evening. They put on a late comeback, but fell to the Bengals 71-57.

Game Notes:

  • The Panthers looked to get off on the right foot as La'Shyra Williams made a jumper from the top of the key on their first possession to go ahead. 
  • Pitt-Bradford kept the Bengals in check through the first 5 minutes of play, holding them to only 9 points in the early going. They retook the lead with 5:13 to go on a Jenna Hicks put back lay-up.
  • The Benglas responded in the last 5 minutes of the quarter, outscoring the Panthers 16-2 over the span.
  • Pitt-Bradford cut the lead to 6 with a 7-0 run to start the 2nd. Williams made two lay-ups around a Shirleah Ragin three to make the score 25-19 with 8 minutes to go in the half. 
  • That would be as close as the Panthers would come for the remainder of the contest as Buffalo State responded with a 15-0 run over 4 minutes.
  • Ragin scored 8 more points and assisted on two more Pitt-Bradford buckets, but the Panthers were unable to limit the Bengals as they went into the halftime break trailing 45-31.
  • Ragin started the second half off with another three, but another long scoring drought doomed the Panthers as Buffalo state was able to extend their lead to as large as 24 points.
  • Pitt-Bradford did answer back in the final period, outscoring the Bengals 19-10.
  • The Panthers slowly whittled away at the deficit, but were only able to cut the lead to 12 points.

Leaders

  • Shirleah Ragin led the way for Pitt-Bradford with a season high 16 points. she also grabbed 9 rebounds and dished out 5 assists.
  • Despite struggling from beyond the three point arc, Shaelyn Snipes was able to record another double-double, her third of the year. She finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds. She also dished out 5 assists and stole the ball 6 times.
  • Jenna Hicks was the team's leading rebounder, finishing with 12, including 5 on the offensive end of the floor. She also added in 6 points.

The loss drops the Panthers' record to 2-8 on the season. With the end of this game, the Panthers have finished the first portion of their season as they head to the holiday break. They will return to action in the new year, as their next game will be on Saturday January 4th at Pitt-Greensburg. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
