Women's basketball manages split in Puerto Rico

Oneonta closes trip with comeback win against Colby-Sawyer

SAN JUAN, P.R. – The SUNY Oneonta women's basketball team concluded its trip to Puerto Rico yesterday with a 43-36 victory against Colby-Sawyer College in their final competition in the Puerto Rico Classico.  The Red Dragons managed a split of its two contests on the trip that included a 56-51 loss to the University of Texas-Dallas on Thursday.

Oneonta (3-6) overcame a seven-point deficit in the final 7:47 of the fourth quarter scoring the final 14 points of the game to defeat Colby Sawyer.  Senior Leanne Corso (Commack/Commack) posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards to lead the comeback effort.
 
The Red Dragons trailed by as many as 10 points midway through the third quarter before Corso scored eight points to bring Oneonta to within three points at 30-27 entering the final stanza.
 
Trailing 36-29, Oneonta began to chip away at Colby-Sawyer's lead and a jumper from junior Clara Culeton (Oswego/Oswego) gave Oneonta a 37-36 advantage.  The Red Dragons converted 4-of-6 free throws down the stretch to seal the deal.
 
Culeton and freshman Lauren Obermayer (East Greenbush/Columbia) each scored seven points in the game while senior Olivia Allrich (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa) added six points to go with 10 rebounds.
 
The Red Dragons began the contest on a 6-0 run before Colby-Sawyer (9-3) got on the board with a trey with 4:21 left in the first. The Chargers then held Oneonta scoreless for the remainder of the frame, adding eight more points to take a 10-6 lead after the first 10 minutes.
 
Oneonta opened the second quarter with seven straight points, capped by a Culeton layup, to take a 13-10 lead. The Chargers then found the range and scored all 10 of their points over the final six minutes of the stanza, while Oneonta went scoreless to take a 20-13 advantage into the break. 
 
Just the Stats
Oneonta shot 25.9% from the floor, while Colby-Sawyer was 23.2%.  Oneonta outrebounded the Chargers 48-41 and converted 13 offensive rebounds into 11 second-chance points.
 
UT-Dallas Recap
In Thursday's game, the two squads entered the final quarter of play knotted at 39-39.  The score was tied three more times in the quarter until a pair of free throws by the Comets broke the final deadlock at 49-49.  UT-Dallas closed out the game converting 5-of-8 from the charity stripe in the final 49 seconds to pick up the win.
 
Corso came off the bench to lead Oneonta with 16 points while Allrich added 15 points as the only players in double figures for the Red Dragons.
 
Oneonta shot nearly 45 percent and Allrich scored 11 points to help lead Oneonta to a 25-18 advantage at halftime.  The Red Dragons led by as many as nine points on two occasions in the first quarter while building a 13-point lead late in the second quarter before the Comets cut into the lead scoring the final six points of the half.
 
The Comets rallied in the third quarter outscoring Oneonta 21-14 to even the score at the conclusion of the period.
 
Just the Stats
Thanks to Corso, Oneonta outscored the UT reserves by a margin of 22-3.  The Red Dragons also held a slight 36-32 advantage of points scored in the paint.
 
What's Next
The women will now enter the holiday break before getting back into action on Saturday, Jan. 11th at home versus New Paltz.
