Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cardinals edge Bears in 2OT thriller, 80-75

POTSDAM, N.Y.—Plattsburgh State (5-7, 2-3 SUNYAC) hit a buzzer beater in the first overtime to stay alive and held off the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (4-7, 1-4) in the second for an 80-75 win at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium on Tuesday night. Sophomore guard Deyvn Elliott (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) posted another double-double with 17 points and 17 boards. Freshman guard Caroline LaFountain (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) also scored 17, while sophomore guard Dyamon Hunter (Bronx, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall) had 16 and freshman forward Jakia Howard (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) also had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

The Bears never trailed in the first quarter and a 6-0 run make it 12-6 at 2:48. A Hunter layup at the close of the period gave the Bears a 16-11 advantage. Howard scored six points in the first 10 minutes and Hunter and freshman guard Tsai Lewis (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) contributed four each.

Plattsburgh answered with a 13-3 run to grab a 24-19 lead over the first 5:20 of the second quarter. Freshman guard Bella Barner (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) hit a three during the streak and Elliott ended it with a jumper, but Cardinals freshman guard Mya Smith (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketchum) countered with a three for a 27-21 lead at the half.

Two buckets to open the third gave Plattsburgh its biggest lead of the game at 31-21 and put Potsdam on the ropes. However, the Bears charged back with a 14-4 run to tie the game at 35 at the 5:07 mark. Elliott and LaFountain scored four each during the stretch and Hunter evened the score with a three. Hunter and LaFountain each gave the Bears a slim lead in a tight contest, but Cardinal senior forward Taylor Clare (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) scored on a layup and Plattsburgh was up 41-40 after 30 minutes. LaFountain scored seven points in the quarter and Hunter had six.

The final 10 minutes were a see-saw battle. LaFountain put the Bears back up 42-41 with jumper, but the Cardinals scored the next seven in a row. Sophomore guard Ly'rell Walker (Yonkers, N.Y./Roosevelt) made it 48-42 at 7:42 with a three-point play. A Hunter three and a Howard layup closed the gap to one point, but Clare and senior forward Taylor Durnin (Lyon Mountain, N.Y./Northern Adirondack) extended the lead back to 52-47 with 5:37 to play. Potsdam slowly chipped away at the lead and Elliott got the Bears within 58-57 with 21 seconds left. Cardinals junior guard Theresa Quinn (Cromwell, Conn./Cromwell) missed one of her two free throws five seconds later and Hunter tied the game at 59 with 11 seconds on the clock. Walker missed a layup at the five-second mark and the game headed to overtime.

The first overtime was more back-and-forth scoring with three lead changes. LaFountain hit a three at 4:04 to give Potsdam a 64-62 lead. Quinn did the same 40 seconds later for a 67-64 Cardinals advantage. Elliott put the Bears back on top 68-67 at 1:31 with a three-point play. After Walker tied the game, Lewis scored to make it 70-68. Plattsburgh sophomore Kayla Doody (Troy, N.Y./Tamarac) sank two free throws to knot the score with 24 seconds left. The Bears then ran the clock down and Elliot hit a seemingly decisive jumper with just four seconds left. The Cardinals called a timeout and Durnin inbounded the ball to Clare, who tied the score with turn-around jumper at the buzzer.

Plattsburgh scored the first five points of the second extra session and never trailed. LaFountain hit a three to get Potsdam within one possession a final time at 1:09, but Quinn sank two free throws with 11 seconds left to ice the win.

Lewis finished with 11 points and eight rebounds for Potsdam. The Bears outrebounded the Cardinals 64-48

Quinn led Plattsburgh with 23 points and Clare scored 16 and grabbed 21 rebounds. Walker closed her night with 12 points and Durnin had seven.

Potsdam heads to Western New York for two SUNYAC games this weekend. The Bears face Fredonia at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and Buffalo State at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
