Panthers Falter in Day 2 of Mountain Mash

Salem, Va. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford softball team was unable to pick up a win on their second day of competition at the season-opening Mountain Mash in Salem, Va. They started their day with a 13-5 loss to Fredonia and lost the second game of the day 8-5 to Susquehanna.

Game 1: Fredonia 13 - Pitt-Bradford 5

Notes:

  • The Blue Devils jumped on starting pitcher Jordan Uhing early as they scored 2 runs in their first at-bat of the game. Fredonia's runs came on a triple, double and single in the inning. The single drove int eh second run with two outs.
  • After a quick at-bat from the Panthers, Fredonia was able to add 3 more runs on 1 hit, 2 errors and a walk. The Panther defense struggled further in the 3rd, as they committed 4 errors in the frame. The errors, along with 6 hits saw Fredonia score 7 runs and push their advantage to 12. 
  • The Panthers were able to strike back in their half of the 3rd inning with 4 runs. Katie Marx led off the inning with a single and then scored 2 batters later on a Chloe Cordova double. Cordova advanced to third on the play and then scored on an error by the catcher. Daytona Wentzel restarted the inning by drawing a walk and then was brought around to score on back to back singles by Gabby Carpenter and Hannah Lathrop. The final tally of the inning scored when Kendra Colegrove reached on a throwing error, which allowed Carpenter to scamper home.
  • Uhing shut down the Blue Devils in the 4th, and the Panthers continued to build momentum, adding another run in the bottom half of the inning. Dolcey Shunk drew a one-out walk and then advanced to third base on a Cordova single. She scored 2 batters later when Carpenter reached on a Fredonia error.
  • Kerrigan Hoffmann entered the game to pitch for the Panthers in the 5th. She set down the side in order, allowing the Panthers to continue their attempt to cut into the lead. 
  • Sophia Fratercangelo led off the inning with a double to left-center but was unable to score when Fredonia retired the last three batters of the inning on two pop-ups to short and a strikeout.
  • Fredonia added a run in the 6th, increasing their lead to 8 runs, and then retired the side in the bottom half of the inning to end the game. 

Leaders:

  • Jordan Uhing (0-2) picked up the loss in the game. She allowed 12 runs, only 3 of them earned, on 11 hits and a walk. she struck out 2 batters. 
  • Kerrigan Hoffmann pitched the final two innings, allowing 1 unearned run on 1 hit.
  • Chloe Cordova went 2 for 4 in the game with a run scored and an RBI. She was the only Panther to have a multi-hit game, finishing with 1 double and a stolen base in the game.
  • Gabby Carpenter went 1 for 4 with a run scored and a run driven in.
  • Hannah Lathrop went 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Game 2: Susquehanna 8 - Pitt-Bradford 5

Notes:

  • Freshman Abby Hinkley made her first start for the Panthers and got off to a tough start. The RiverHawks scored 4 quick runs on 3 hits in the 1st. 3 of the runs scored with two outs as Susquehanna hit an RBI single and followed it with a home run to left field.
  • Hinkley settled down in the second, keeping the RiverHawks off the board, which allowed the Panthers to get back in the game in their at-bat in the third. They scored 2 runs without a hit in the inning. Chloe Cordova reached on an error and then was able to score when Rachel Przybysz also reached on an error. She was driven in a batter later when Gabby Carpenter brought her home with an RBI groundout to short.
  • Susquehanna responded to the Panthers with 4 more in the 3rd. Three of the runs once again came with 2 outs, as the Riverhawks hit a bases-loaded 3 run triple to close the inning.
  • Hinkley was able to put another 0 in the books in the 4th to complete her day.
  • The Panthers scored 3 more runs in the 5th to avoid the early finish. Cordova brought in two runs with a 2 run triple to right-center. She scored a batter later when Przybysz singled to right-center to bring Cordova in. 
  • Jordan Uhing entered the game in the 5th. She pitched the final two innings, holding Susquehanna to no runs and 1 hit for the final two innings. 
  • The Panthers were able to load the bases with three singles in the top of the 6th, but Susquehanna got two straight popups to end the rally and get out of the jam.

Leaders:

  • Abby Hinkley (0-1) took the loss in the game, allowing 8 earned runs on 6 hits in 4 innings. She struck out 1 batter.
  • Jordan Uhing threw 2 innings, allowing only 1 hit and 1 walk. 
  • Betty Fratercangelo was the only Panther to record a multi-hit game. She went 2 for 3 and scored a run.
  • Chloe Cordova went 1 for 4 with a triple. She scored 2 runs and brought in 2 more.
  • Rachel Przybysz finished 1 for 4 with one run and one RBI.

Head Coach Tina Phillips said, "I liked the fight we showed today. 0-4 isn't the way we wanted to start but we played three good teams in tough cold and windy conditions. Hopefully, our freshmen got some of their early-season jitters out of the way. Looking forward, we need a few more timely hits and to clean up some things defensively."

The Panthers went are now 0-4 on the season. They will have a week off before heading to Tucson, Arizona for their Spring Break trip. Their first game on the trip will be on Sunday, March 8th. They will play Occidental at 6:30 p.m. EST, and then take on Dickinson at 10:30 p.m. EST.
