Women's Lacrosse Stuns Canton, 13-12, in Overtime in Season Opener

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Junior midfielder Frankie Porcaro (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport) scored with 42.9 seconds remaining in the first half of the first overtime period to lift the Plattsburgh State women's lacrosse team to a 13-12 season-opening victory over non-conference SUNY Canton on Wednesday afternoon at the Field House Complex.

That goal completed a Cardinal comeback that resulted in five unanswered goals to close the game. After Canton's senior midfielder Molly Denny scored a woman-up goal with 9:33 left in regulation to go up 12-8, freshman attacker Katie Kallamni (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) answered with a woman-up score less than a minute later to trim the gap to three. Kallamni buried a free-position shot with 7:31 to go in the second half, while sophomore attacker/midfielder Allie Vangas (Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y./Cornwall) tallied 22 seconds later to pull the Cardinals within one. After Plattsburgh State possessed the ball for the majority of the stretch run, sophomore attacker Emily Caoili (Lagrangeville, N.Y./Arlington) buried a free-position shot with 1:19 left to tie the game at 12-all.

The Cardinals won the draw to start out the first half of the first overtime period, and back-to-back turnovers ultimately got the ball back to Plattsburgh State with just more than 1:30 remaining in the first half of the first overtime. Vangas wound up feeding Porcaro from "X," and Porcaro moved herself to the top of the arc before ripping the game-winning shot.

Wednesday marked the first overtime game for the Cardinals in program history, and it helped avenge their 14-4 setback to Canton in Plattsburgh State's inaugural contest last season.

Plattsburgh State moves to 1-0 overall for the first time in program history with the win and visits Norwich University next on Wednesday, March 4, at 4 p.m. Canton slides to 0-1 overall with the loss and next visits Utica College on Wednesday, March 4, at 4 p.m.

Senior midfielder Kerri Corcoran (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) scored the first goal of the game 1:50 into the contest before Canton went on a 3-0 surge behind two goals from Denny and one goal from senior attacker Logan Bush. Vangas tallied a woman-up goal with 16:05 remaining in the first half before freshman midfielder/attacker Lindsay Guzzetta (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) scored her first collegiate goal with 12:34 left in the opening stanza to tie the game at 3-all.

Canton then scored four unanswered goals, with Denny scoring woman-up to open up the surge. Bush and sophomore midfielder Samantha Dayter both tallied for the Kangaroos, with Bush earning an assist on Dayter's goal, while a Denny goal extended the Canton advantage to 7-3 with 9:58 left in the first half. Corcoran scored on a free-position attempt with 9:08 to go, while Dayter countered for Canton with a goal 1:28 later. Freshman attacker/midfielder Kate Kennedy (Waddington, N.Y./Massena) netted her first collegiate goal with 3:23 remaining in the first half, which rounded out the halftime score of 8-5 in favor of the Kangaroos.

Dayter converted a woman-up free-position shot 2:33 into the second half, while Dayter connected with Denny to hand Canton a 10-5 edge, its largest of the game. Freshman attacker/defender Deja Richardson (Rochester, N.Y./Sperry) found Porcaro for a goal with 21:01 left, marking Richardson's first collegiate point. Guzzetta tallied her first collegiate assist on Vangas' goal midway through the second half, while Kallamni buried her first collegiate goal on a free-position shot with 10:20 remaining. Dayter cashed in a free-position shot less than a minute later to stake the visitors to an 11-8 advantage.

Ball control wound up being an issue for both teams in snowy conditions, with Plattsburgh State going 15-for-25 on clears and Canton going 13-of-26 in transition. The Cardinals held a 42-27 edge in shots, a 15-12 cushion in draw controls and a 31-27 margin in ground balls.

Vangas tallied four points on three goals and one assist, while Kallamni had a hat trick in her collegiate debut. Porcaro and Corcoran tallied two goals each, while Caoili, Guzzetta and Kennedy all scored as well. Guzzetta stuffed the stat sheet with six ground balls, four draw controls and two caused turnovers, while Corcoran controlled a team-best five draws.

Denny scored six goals and added six ground balls and five caused turnovers for Canton, while Dayter found the back of the net four times. Bush scored twice and posted a game-high seven draw controls.

Freshman goalie Sarah Braja (Glen Cove, N.Y./Glen Cove) earned the win in net for the Cardinals in her collegiate debut, making seven saves against five goals allowed in 42:15 of work. Junior goalie Nicole Piskorowski turned aside 22 shots in goal for the Kangaroos.
