PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – A pair of Plattsburgh State men's cross country student-athletes placed in the top five to lead the Cardinals to a second-place team finish at the Cardinal Classic on Saturday at Rugar Woods.
Junior
Luke Groves (Slingerlands, N.Y./Guilderland) ran a 5,000-meter cross country personal-best time of 16:25.5. Just behind Groves was junior
Andrew Horan (Albany, N.Y./Guilderland), who placed fifth with a personal-best time of 16:35.1.
The third Cardinal to cross the finish line was junior
Joseph Chianese (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River), who ran a personal-best time of 17:03.2 to place 11th.
Plattsburgh States' top five was rounded out by junior
Brendon VanVlack (Duanesburg, N.Y./Duanesburg), who finished 13th with a time of 17:10.2, and junior
Arthur Horan (Albany, N.Y./Guilderland), who ran a time of 17:10.9 to place 14th. Both VanVlack and
Arthur Horan set personal bests.
Also competing for the Cardinals, freshman
Liam Gildea (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) placed 15th (17:25.5), junior
Timothy Lorenzen (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush) placed 16th (17:26.1), freshman
Joe Yusaitis (Stillwater, N.Y./Stillwater) placed 18th (17:36.9), freshman
Josh Herman (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) placed 21st (18:03.9), freshman
Ryan Worobey (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) placed 23rd (18:24.2), sophomore
James Faraci (Troy, N.Y./Troy) placed 24th (18:24.6, personal best), sophomore
Brian Keach (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) placed 25th (18:35.7, personal best) and freshman
Erik Sicko (Stillwater, N.Y./Stillwater) placed 29th (19:22.7).
Plattsburgh State finished second out of three teams. The Cardinals tallied 44 points, while St. Lawrence finished first with 20 points and Castleton came in third place with 80 points.
The individual first-place finisher was Matthew
Abell of St. Lawrence. Abell ran a time of 16:11.0.
The Cardinals host the Plattsburgh State Cross Country Invite on Saturday, Sept. 7 at Rugar Woods.
