Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Schultz last second basket lifts men's basketball to win over Potsdam

A Quick Look
Senior Ian Schultz (Clifton Park, NY/CBA) scored nine of his 12 points in the second half including the game-winner with one second left in the game lifting the SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team to a 62-60 win at home against Potsdam.  The win for the Red Dragons evened its overall record at 3-3 while moving to 2-0 in the SUNYAC after the opening weekend of conference play.

"We sure seem to be making it exciting for our fans," commented Head Coach Cameron Conover.  "Our guys have been working really hard in practice and now they can focus all of their attention to their schoolwork with final exams this week.  It's time to finish out the semester strong."

The Inside Story
Schultz's heroics came on the ensuing possession after Isaiah Joseph hit a three-pointer to tie the score at 60 apiece with 10 seconds to go.  Oneonta kept its composure and advanced the ball into the front court where Schultz found himself with the ball with time winding down.  Schultz turned, faced the basket, and drilled a jumper from the top of the key.

Potsdam had one last opportunity, as they advanced the ball over half court on the inbounds pass where a shot by Danny Delsol-Lowry bounced off the front of the rim as time expired.  Delsol-Lowry finished the game with 15 points including 8-of-10 from the foul line.

With the score tied at 44 apiece at the 7:36 mark of the second half, junior Andres Rivera (Bronx, NY/Walton) converted a driving layup to give Oneonta the lead.  From that point, there were four lead changes including a layup by senior Harrison Deegan (Putnam Valley, NY/Putnam Valley) that gave the Red Dragons a 54-53 lead that they pushed to 57-53 on a Schultz layup at the 2:26 mark.

Junior Joseph Bull (Bronx, NY/Mount St. Michael Academy) gave Oneonta its 60-57 lead with a turnaround jumper with 31 seconds remaining.  Bull finished the game as the high scorer for Oneonta with 18 points to go along with 11 rebounds.

The Red Dragons never surrendered the lead until late in the first half after grabbing an 8-3 lead in the opening five minutes of the game.  Potsdam (5-1, 1-1 SUNYAC) took a brief lead at 24-23 at the 2:44 mark before Oneonta closed the half with nine unanswered points to take a 32-24 lead at the break.

Neither team could buy a basket in the opening five minutes of the second half until Deegan got things started with a bucket at 14:53. Deegan finished the contest with 10 points.

Another basket by Bull gave Oneonta its largest lead of the game at 36-24.  Ten unanswered points by the visitors made the score 36-34 at the 12:01 mark.  A pair of old fashioned three-point plays by Isaiah Joseph led the way for the Bears.  Joseph led all scorers in the game with 20 points.

Just the Stats
The biggest stat advantage came for Oneonta outrebounding Potsdam 45-37 including 13-7 on the offensive glass.  The Red Dragons shot 36 percent (23-63) from the field.  The Bears converted 18-of-22 free throws for 82 percent but only shot 35 percent (19-54) from the floor.

What's Next
Oneonta will have some time off during the final exam period before getting back into action at the end of the month at the Medgers Evers Tournament on Dec. 28-29.  Oneonta's opening opponent is North Carolina Wesleyan.
