Cortland battles past Women’s Basketball, 84-71

CORTLAND, N.Y.— Liv LeBaron (Corning/Corning East), Katie Villarini (Hamburg/Hamburg) and Kaelee Lynch (Atwater, CA/Buhach Colony) all scored in double-figures, but it was not enough as Buffalo State's late rally fell short as it dropped a 84-71 loss to host Cortland in SUNYAC action this evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • LeBaron led the Bengals with 24 points to go along with seven rebounds and four steals.
  • Villarini added 20 points and seven rebounds, while Lynch finished 6 for 11 from the floor and 3 of 6 from distance en route to a season-high 15-point performance.
  • Lexi Emmi (Liverpool/Liverpool) chipped in five points and four rebounds.
  • Kendall Mills (Buffalo/Kenmore East) and Tori Hackett (Canandaigua/Canandaigua) each tallied six rebounds.
  • Buffalo State and Cortland matched each other point-for-point in the opening frame until the Red Dragons used an 8-0 run to claim a 20-12 lead after the first 10 minutes of action.
  • Cortland extended its lead to double-digits early in the second quarter, but the Bengals battled back and used a three-point field goal by Lynch to cut the deficit back to 28-20 with 7:16 left before halftime.
  • The Red Dragons closed the half on a 13-5 run to take a 41-25 halftime lead.
  • Buffalo State outscored Cortland 23-18 in the third frame, fueled by 15 combined points from LeBaron, Villarini and Lynch, to trim the deficit to 59-48 at the final intermission.
  • The Bengals cut the lead to only four points multiple times in the fourth quarter, but could not complete the comeback as the Red Dragons scored seven of the final nine points to complete the win.
  • Buffalo State held a 45-37 advantage in rebounds, a 17-12 edge in second-chance points and a 23-19 advantage in bench production.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Shannon McGuire posted a game-high 27 points, going 10 for 10 from the charity stripe.
  • Beth Bonin added 22 points and seven rebounds.
