Gawlak's Late Game Free Throw Lifts the Hawks Over Oswego State

HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Hilbert College women's basketball team returned to their home court for the first time this season, honored the 2018-19 team in a pregame ceremony and picked up their first win of the season against Oswego State.

THE BASICS
  • Final Score:  Hilbert 62 | Oswego State 61
  • Location:   Hafner Recreation Center, Hamburg, NY
  • Records: Hilbert 1-1 (0-0 AMCC) | Oswego State 0-1 (0-0 SUNYAC)
  • Before the Game:  The athletics department and women's basketball coaching staff welcomed back and honored the 2018-19 team in a pregame AMCC Championship Ring ceremony which celebrated the program's back-to-back conference championships and automatic bids to the NCAA National Tournament.  Each player, manager and coach received an AMCC Championship Ring after Amy Senefelder shared her Sal Buscaglia Coach of the Year award with her assistant coaches, Scott Foster and John Jay Hall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hilbert jumped out to a big lead in the opening session hitting six 3-point shots in the first 10 minutes.  Both Emily Gawlak and Taylor Corts connected three times a piece to lift the Hawks to a 26-13 advantage before the second quarter began.
  • The Hawks extended their lead to 15 (29-14) behind another deep shot, this time by Ashley Schroeder at 9:32.
  • Oswego State's offense came alive as they outscored the Hawks 23-6 taking their first lead in the game at 1:12 and they rode a four-point lead into the locker room after the Grey and Yellow went cold from the floor.
  • Hilbert forced three consecutive Oswego State turnover at the start of the third quarter and cut the margin to one point off another Corts make from downtown (40-41) at 7:10.
  • Oswego maintained their hold on the score board in a low-scoring third quarter.  Both teams connected for only 11 points as the Lakers took a 50-46 lead into the final frame.
  • Things weren't falling in Hilbert's favor as they quickly found themselves in an 8-point hole just 68-seconds later.  Both teams traded buckets until Hilbert took advantage of Oswego's foul trouble and sliced the margin to two (55-57) with just over three minutes remaining.
  • Emily Gawlak gave the Hawks their first lead in the second half when, after making her first free throw at 2:27, she scored in the paint thanks to a Demi Battin offensive rebound and Emma Fredo assist.
  • Hilbert played through two lead changes and one tie score before Gawlak broke the 61-61 tied with a make at the charity stripe with :08 remaining for the win.
GAME NOTES
  • Taylor Corts led three Hawks into double figure points, knocking down four 3-pointers (4-for-4 at the foul line), for her first 22-point game of the season.  Emily Gawlak tossed in 16 points and pulled in six rebounds, as did Corts.
  • Freshman Macy Kisner led the Hawks with eight rebounds and posted her first double digit game with 10 points.  Demi Battin pushed the pace with five assists and game-high four steals.
  • Oswego outscored the Hawks (32-16) in the paint and 22-9 in second chance points.  The Lakers were led by Ramatoulaye Sy with 20 points (scoring only one bucket in the second half) and 11 rebounds playing through foul trouble.
  • Oswego State was able to stay in the game thanks to their 18-for-24 shooting from the foul line along with their 50 (20 O) to 36 advantage on the glass.
WHAT'S NEXT
  • The Hawks hit the road this weekend to participate in the Mike Daley Memorial Tournament hosted by Nazareth College.  Hilbert will battle cross-town rival Buffalo State at 7:00 pm Saturday, November 16.  They will either move to the 3:00 p.m. championship game or drop to the 1:00 p.m. consolation game against either Nazareth (1-0) or SUNY Cobleskill (1-0) November 17.
