Throggs Neck, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz suffered its second loss of the season Saturday, falling on the road to SUNY Maritime, 94-80.
The Hawks (2-2 overall) got off to a rough start and quickly needed to climb out of a 12-point hole midway through the first half after a 12-0 run by the Privateers. The hosts' lead ballooned to as many as 14 with about eight minutes left in the half, but SUNY New Paltz inched its way back down the stretch before the break.
Nick Arthur picked up a defensive rebound and quickly found
RJ Meyers-Turner who pushed the ball up the floor for an easy basket to facilitate a Hawks 10-1 run to help tie the score at 35 with about three minutes to go.
Aaron Satin then aided SUNY New Paltz in re-gaining the lead, following an assist on a Meyers-Turner 3, then following up with a trey of his own on the ensuing possession to push the Hawks ahead, 38-35.
The two teams went back-and-forth in the final two minutes, tying the score twice before Chris Ruscillo gave Maritime the advantage at the break following a put-back in the final seconds.
Trailing 43-41 at halftime, SUNY New Paltz couldn't hold on to its momentum in the following 20 minutes. The Hawks were within six after a
Jake Passaretti fast-break bucket, but Maritime countered with a 19-8 stretch where it scored on 8-of -11 offensive possessions to create its largest cushion at 17 with about 10 minutes remaining in the game.
SUNY New Paltz cut the score as close at 10, but never threatened the Privateers lead down the stretch and ultimately succumbed to its second loss in three games, while Maritime ended a four-game losing skid to improve to 2-4 overall on the year.
"This loss was because of myself as the head coach," said Hawks coach
Keith Kenney following the defeat. "I did not prepare them in anyway for this game properly and Maritime beat us in every facet and deserved to beat us this bad."
SUNY New Paltz shot 40 percent as a team, including 21.7 percent from the perimeter (5-for-23). Maritime made 56.3 percent from the floor, including about 42 percent from 3-point range (13-for-31).
Isaiah Bien-Aise led the Hawks offensively with 13 points off the bench, while adding seven rebounds and two assists. Arthur added 12 points and six rebounds off the bench, the former a career-high for the senior. Passaretti also contributed 12 points to go along with a team-high five assists, while
Tristan Wissemann chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds.
SUNY New Paltz is back home in its next contest when it enters conference play against SUNY Potsdam Dec. 6 in the Hawk Center.
