Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

No. 4 Statesmen escape Bears, 2-1

POTSDAM, N.Y.—The fourth-ranked Hobart College Statesmen (6-1-1) scored two first period goals and made it stand up in a 2-1 win over the SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (1-6-1) on Saturday night. Junior forward Paul Michura (Chester, N.J./New Jersey Rockets) scored for Potsdam and sophomore goalie Ryan Glander (Campbell Hall, N.Y./Rochester Junior Monarchs) made 31 saves in his first start of the season.

The first period opened at a quick pace with end to end sprints. Glander and Statesmen sophomore goalie Joe Halstrom (Fort Collins, Colo./Burlington Cougars) made multiple challenging stops on blasts from medium range or closer. Hobart broke through at 7:30 when senior captain Zach Sternbach (Loudonville, N.Y./Rochester Jr. Americans) picked up the puck in the corner, circled in front of the net and ripped into the top left corner of the net. The Statesmen doubled the lead at 17:01 when senior captain Lawson MacDougall (Williamstown, Ontario/Cornwall Colts) jammed the puck home from the left post. Hobart outshot the Bears 16-10 in the first period.

Potsdam matched the Statemen's energy in the second period and outhustled them for the majority of the 20 minutes. The effort paid off at the 2:52 mark. Michura gloved down a clearing attempt at the blue line, fought off two defensemen and blasted a shot between the pads of Halstrom to make it 2-1. The Bears were all around the Hobart net the rest of the period, but just missed the equalizer on several chances. At the other end of the ice, Glander was sharp, stonewalling the Statesmen on a point blank, two-on-one attempt. Potsdam outshot Hobart 13-8 in the period.

The Bears started the third period with 1:43 left on a power play. Potsdam swarmed the net, but were unable to score. A close call resulted in multiple penalties after a scrum and Hobart managed to kill off a major. The goaltending duel between Glander and Halstrom continued the rest of the contest with neither giving ground. The Bears called timeout with 1:22 remaining and pulled Glander for an extra-attacker. However, the Statesmen were able to tie up the puck and run out the clock.

Halstrom was outstanding with 38 saves. Potsdam outshot Hobart 39-33. The Statesmen were 0-for-2 on the power play and the Bears were 0-for-4.

Potsdam returns to action after the Thanksgiving Holiday for two neutral site games at St. Anselm College next weekend. The Bears square off with No. 8 Trinity College at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Wesleyan University at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Prior to the game Leo Corvino, who is battling Angelman's Syndrome, dropped the puck. It was Angelman Syndrome Awareness night at Maxcy Ice Arena. The event was organized by junior forward Jacob Juron (Latham, N.Y./South Shore Kings) who arranged for the Bears to wear special jerseys, which were auctioned off after the game. All donations and auction proceeds were given to the Foundation for Angelman Syndrome Therapeutics or FAST.
