Game Recap: Softball |

Softball opens season with a pair of setbacks

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta softball team dropped a pair of games to open the 2020 season today.  Oneonta dropped the opener to No. 21 Salisbury 8-5 and then lost to Clarkson 10-2 in five innings.

The Inside Story
Oneonta battled Salisbury even through the first two innings before scoring an unearned run in the top of the third inning.  Freshman Gianna DiGiovanni (Wantagh/Sacred Heart Academy) came around to score when the catcher's throw sailed into the outfield as she was attempting to steal second base.

The big blow for Salisbury came in the bottom of the third when they loaded the bases with two outs before the bases were cleared via a grand slam.  The Sea Gulls added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on the strength of a three-run home run.

The Red Dragons plated a pair of runs in both the sixth and seventh innings for the final.  Junior Caroline Koch (New City/Clarkstown South) drove in two of the four runs for Oneonta.  Her first was a triple in the sixth to score senior Jade Meehan (Halcottsville/Roxbury Central).  She drove in Meehan in the seventh with an infield single.

In the second game versus Clarkson, the Golden Knights jumped on Oneonta starter Julia Calabro (Wantagh/St. John the Baptist) for four runs in the top of the first inning.  The Red Dragons got one back in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single from sophomore Megan Palmatier (Bainbridge/Bainbridge-Guilford).

Clarkson added a pair of runs in the top of the third inning before Oneonta plated a single run in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 6-2 entering the fourth inning.  Senior Bailey Schwark (Port Ewen/Kingston) drove in Koch with a sacrifice fly.

The Golden Knights struck for four more runs in the top of the fourth, which proved to be the difference, as they held on for the victory in five innings.

Just the Stats
Meehan finished game one with three hits and two runs out of the leadoff spot.  Koch collected two hits while driving in the pair of runs.

Senior Alyssa Bluethgen (Commack/Commack) struck out a pair in the game one loss.

Palmatier collected a pair of hits against Clarkson.

What's Next
