UTICA, N.Y. – Fredonia State recorded its first women's lacrosse win of the season, a 16-13 victory Sunday afternoon over the SUNY Poly Wildcats.
In handling the Wildcats their first loss (2-1), the Blue Devils (1-1) built an eight-goal lead, only to see it trimmed to two goals in the late going. A goal by Julia Nicolosi with 2:06 ended a 7-1 SUNY Poly run and put an end to the Wildcats' comeback bid.
Alyssa Kissel led the Fredonia State offense with five goals, Nicolosi and Madeline Haney had three goals each, and Allison Coon and Casie White two goals each. Coon also had five assists for a seven-point game. Erin Woods contributed one goal and three assists.
Emily Carr was credited with seven saves. The freshman goalkeeper earned her first collegiate win.
Kayla Prosinski had six goals and Jasmin Brown four goals for the Wildcats.
Kissell opened the Blue Devils scoring with a pair of goals in the first three minutes. SUNY Poly answered with a pair of goals before Fredonia State took the lead for good on a goal by Nicolosi, assisted by Woods, for a 3-2 lead. It was the start of a three-goal run which include Haney's first goal of the season and the first collegiate goal by Woods.
The Blue Devils closed out the first half with a 6-1 run, two goals each by Kissel and White and one each by Nicolosi and Haney, with Coon picking up a pair of assists. They added to their 12-6 lead with the first two goals of the second half, by Coon and by Kissel assisted by Coon, to open their largest lead, 14-6.
The Fredonia State went dormant over the next 20 minutes. In the interim, SUNY Poly went on a 7-1 run to draw with two, 15-13 with 3:34 left. Nicolosi stemmed the tide with her third goal of the game, a quick shot immediately after Coon gathered in a rebound following a save by SUNY Poly goalkeeper Alycia Lugo.
The Blue Devils outshot the Wildcats 34-24 and had a 19-12 advantage in draw controls. Bri Emery was credited with eight draws while White and Natalie Prims had three each. Kissel collected four ground balls. Nicolosi, Julie Culver, and Ally Kilburn had two caused turnovers each.
The Blue Devils are back in action Tuesday when they visit D'Youville.
