Women’s Soccer suffers OT heartbreak against Utica, 1-0

UTICA N.Y.—Buffalo State was unable to convert on a couple of first-half chances and Utica made it pay with a lone marker in the first overtime en route to a 1-0 victory in tonight's non-conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Alexis Cummings (Tonawanda/Kenmore East), Sarah Berlinger (Grand Island/Grand Island), Kayla Derenda (Alden/Alden) and Kyndal Hetzel (Hilton/Hilton) all finished with two shots on goal to lead the Bengals.
  • Buffalo State applied constant pressure from the opening whistle, including outshooting the Pioneers 9-0 and tallying five corners, but could not break through as the score remained level at halftime.
  • Utica opened the second frame with four-consecutive shots, but the Buffalo State defense held strong by blocking three out of the four shots to keep the score even.
  • The Bengals closed out the second half with three shots in the final eight minutes but failed to end the contest in regulation.
  • The Pioneers outshot Buffalo State 3-0 in the first overtime, including a header off a free-kick with 4:47 remaining that proved to be the difference.
  • Taylor Carillo (Pine Bush/Pine Bush) finished with five saves in net for the Bengals.
  • Buffalo State finished with a 16-10 shots and an 11-6 shots on goal advantage.
