MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.-- Fredonia put the pressure on Penn State Berks when they entered the ninth inning down three runs on Sunday, but fell short losing 6-4.
The pressure began with one out when
Kole Brink was hit by a pitch and
Matt Heffernan stroked a single.
Tylor Murphy entered the game as a pinch hitter and worked a walk to load the bases. After a strikeout,
Russell Mistretta watched ball four miss the plate to push Brink home from third and keep the two out rally alive. The Berks pitcher was then able to force
Tyler Phillips to flyout to the centerfielder and stop the Blue Devils late push.
Despite giving up seven hits in his four innings pitched, Fredonia starting pitcher
Billy Sanborn held the Berks to only two runs but recieved the loss. Junior
Ryan Hann pitched the remaining five innings, giving up four runs and striking out three.
The top of the lineup for the Blue Devils continued their hot hitting from yesterday. Mistretta, Phillips,
Pat Bigham and
James Mitchell all had a double in Sunday's loss. Brink added a triple in the second inning and was driven home by a Heffernan single who finished the day with two hits.
Brink and
Nic Fiore were busy most of the game in the middle of the infield. The second baseman and shortstop tandem recorded a combined 13 fielding assists including a double play without an error.
The Blue Devils will now prepare for their Florida trip in the Russmatt Invitational next week. That will kick off with a doubleheader against RIT on Friday.
