GENEVA, N.Y. - In a rematch of last season's NCAA Tournament matchup, the No. 6 Oswego State men's ice hockey team was downed, 4-1, by fourth-ranked Hobart on the road on Friday evening. This was the second top-five team that the Lakers have faced in the past week.
THE BASICS
- Final Score: Statesmen 4, Lakers 1
- Location: The Cooler, Hobart College - Geneva, N.Y.
- Records: Hobart 5-1-1 | Oswego 4-2
HOW IT HAPPENED
- It was a scoreless first period with both teams getting a few quality chances and the Lakers leading in shots (19-16) and shots-on-goal (12-10).
- Hobart had the first chance of the second period when they slung a pass out front but was smothered by a great block by senior Mitch Emerson.
- A minute later (2:37), the Statesmen cleared their own zone with a deep pass that was gathered behind the Laker defense for a topshelf shot past Laker goalie David Richer to open the scoring.
- At 5:43, Hobart controlled a faceoff just outside the Laker blue line and swung a pass wide to a charging Mark Benenerito who was able to square up on the right side and fire a shot in for the second goal for the hosts.
- After an Oswego timeout, momentum began to turn as the Lakers began firing passes from deep in the defensive zone out to the Hobart blue line for three solid chances.
- Late in the period, the Statesmen were able to get a 2-on-1 opportunity and swung the puck to the open man where Richer made a huge save to keep Oswego in it.
- In similar fashion to the second goal, Emerson secured the puck just outside the Hobart blue line and tapped it ahead to defenseman Max Novick.
- Novick rifled a shot on goal and the rebound kicked out to Travis Broughman, who hammered it home with just under a minute left in the period to cut the lead in half.
- It was Broughman's fourth goal and team-leading seventh point of the season.
- The hosts recorded a one-time power play goal at 6:33 of the third period and their forecheck forced a deep turnover that led to the fourth score halfway through the final period.
- Oswego won the faceoff battle (40-30) led by Josh Zizek's 15 wins while Hobart ended with the edge in shots-on-goal (39-26).
- Senior Michael Gillespie was very active for Oswego with 11 shots and seven on goal.
