Men's Basketball captures De Costa Tournament

Senior Harrison Deegan named tournament MVP

A Quick Look
The SUNY Oneonta men's basketball team scored in triple digits enroute to a 108-83 victory versus host Medgar Evers in the championship game of the Dr. Carol De Costa tournament.  Oneonta has now won four straight games to end 2019 and push its overall record to 5-3.

"Tonight, was a great all-around team effort," stated Head Coach Cameron Conover.  "Our guys played extremely unselfish as evidenced by our 29 assists. Our goal was to win this tournament and our guys were determined to do whatever it took to do that, and we are going back to Oneonta with the championship trophy."

The Inside Story
The Red Dragons had five players reach double figures today led by tournament MVP Harrison Deegan (Putnam Valley, NY/Putnam Valley) and sophomore Dylan Trombley (Moriah, NY/Moriah) who each scored 16 points.  Trombley and junior Andres Rivera (Bronx, NY/Walton) combined for 30 points to lead the reserves who scored 50 points in the contest.  Deegan also added 10 boards.

Senior Kevin Mackin (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet), who combined to scored 32 points during the two-day tournament joined Deegan on the All-Tournament Team.

Junior Joe Bull recorded a double-double with 13 points and a game high 14 rebounds.  Classmate Sean Nolan (Voorheesville, NY/Voorheesville) rounded out the quintet of double-digit scorers with 12 points.

Oneonta held a slim 8-7 lead in the early going before Medgar Evers (3-8) put together an 11-2 run to grab an 18-10 advantage with just over 13 minutes to go in the opening half.

The Red Dragons countered with a 19-4 run of its own over the next seven minutes to seize control of the contest.  Trombley and Rivera led the charge with a combined 13 points.

The Cougars regrouped and pulled back to 37-34 at the 3:33 mark, but Oneonta outscored the hosts 12-7 over the remainder of the half capped by a Deegan layup as time expired.

A 12-0 burst by Oneonta to start the second half put the game out of reach for the Cougars.  The Red Dragons continued to add to its lead building it to 31 points on a Bull three-pointer at the 5:41 mark.

"This was a well-run tournament and I want to thank Medgar Evers for hosting us," commented Conover.  "Aside from basketball, this tournament provided our guys the opportunity to support a great cause and every player and coach donated their own money to DEZYSTRONGFOUNDATION  and I'm proud of our team for that. www.dezystrong.org
