Vertuccio and Frampton Power Lakers to Sweep

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State softball team got homeruns from Gabriella Vertuccio and Angela Frampton to help the team secure a pair of 8-0 decisions over the Bears of Potsdam on Wednesday afternoon at the Laker Softball Field.  Oswego won the first in five innings, then the second in six innings.  With the results, the team improves to 11-7 (4-2 SUNYAC) while Potsdam falls to 3-15 (0-4).

Game 1
Oswego used a five-run surge in first inning to take charge of the opener, highlighted by a 3-run homerun by senior Vertuccio.  It was her team-leading third homerun of the season.

Potsdam loaded the bases in the top of the second on a one-out hit and a pair of Lakers' errors, but a double play ended the threat from the Bears.  Oswego added another run in the bottom of the frame when Rebecca Vilchez singled and advanced to third on a Jessica Roe base hit.  A Vertuccio sacrifice fly would bring Vilchez home.

The offense kept the pressure on when Erin Sweeney started a two-out rally in the third inning with a single and a steal followed by an RBI-triple by center fielder Sarah McCullough.  Vilchez smacked her second double and third hit of the game to plate McCullough and put the Lakers up 8-0 after three innings.

On the mound, Vilchez (8-4) earned her eighth win of the season while holding Potsdam to four hits over five innings and striking out one batter.

Game 2
Sophomore Jessica Roe (1-1) pitched a dominant five innings in earning her first win of the season, allowing a pair of hits and striking out five to propel Oswego to the victory.

The Lakers took the early lead in the first when they put runners on the corners with a leadoff double by Sweeney and a single by Vilchez.  Vertuccio got the run in on a sacrifice fly to put Oswego up 1-0 early.  It remained a one-run game until the third when Vilchez reached on an error and advanced on a Roe groundout.  Vertuccio plated her for the second time with a RBI-double that made it 2-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, Oswego broke the game open.  Madelana Wrubel led things off with a single and advanced on a Sweeney sacrifice bunt.  Vilchez doubled her home and scored when Vertuccio doubled in her next at-bat.  Frampton then delivered a two-run homerun, also her third of the season, to put the Lakers up 6-0.

Frampton came on in relief of Roe in the sixth and retired the Bears in order before Oswego finished the game off when junior Carly Lawless doubled to lead off the bottom of the inning.  Fellow junior Emily Knowlden smashed a two-run walk-off homerun to conclude the scoring.

The softball team is back in action at 3 p.m. on Friday when they travel to New Paltz for a conference doubleheader.
