Panthers Fall to Cortland in Opening Game of Woodcliff Hotel and Spa Tournament

Pittsford, N.Y. -- The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford men's basketball team returned to action on Sunday evening in the opening game of the Woodcliff Hotel and Spa Tournament in Rochester. They fell to Cortland by a score of 98-73. The tournament is being hosted by St. John Fisher College.

Game Notes:

  • Playing their first game in nearly two weeks, the Panthers rust showed as they struggled to get going offensively. They were held to one point through the first three minutes of play, until Alex Rodriguez hit a three to kick start the offense. Alex Breindel hit a three after a defensive stop to tie the game at 7.
  • The Panthers moved into the lead after Deondre Terwilliger made a lay-up. The Red Dragons responded with a lay-up of their own, but saw Pitt-Bradford score three straight baskets to take a six point lead. Dylan Meyer made two jump shots in a row and Miles Parker added a third.
  • The Panthers lead grew to its largest of the game, 8 points, after Nick Carmichael made back to back lay-ups to set the score at 22-14 at the midpoint of the first half.
  • Cortland erased the lead with two three pointers and one old fashioned three point play. Another Terwilliger lay-up regained the lead for Pitt-Bradford and Jeffrey Fry made a three pointer to put the Panthers up four.
  • The teams traded baskets until a timeout with 3:26 left in the half. Cortland closed the period on an 11-1 run to take a ten-point lead to the break.
  • The Red Dragons continued their run after the break, scoring the first 6 points of the second half. They quickly pushed their lead to 20 points 4 minutes into the period, and maintained the lead for the remainder of the contest.

Leaders:

  • Alex Rodriguez led the Panthers with 15 points. He scored them all from beyond the three point arc, finishing the game 5-10 from the field.
  • Dylan Meyer finished with another efficient game inside for Pitt-Bradford. He scored 12 points in only 17 minutes, shooting 6-7 from the field.
  • The Panthers were outrebounded 41-31 in the game, but saw an improvement handling the ball, as they committed only 12 turnovers.

The loss moves Pitt-Bradford to 1-8 on the season. They will take on SUNY Poly in the consolation game of the tournament on Monday afternoon. Tip-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
