Early goal lifts Fredonia past Women’s Soccer, 1-0

FREDONIA, N.Y.— Buffalo State surrendered an early goal and failed to capitalize on a 16-12 shots advantage as it dropped a 1-0 loss to "Battle by the Lake" rival Fredonia in SUNYAC action this afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Kyndal Hetzel (Hilton/Hilton) and Erin Valente (Latham/Shaker) combined for 10 of the 16 total shots for the Bengals.
  • Fredonia provided the game's only scoring with a lone marker in the 13th minute that proved to be the difference.
  • Allie Reeds (E. Amherst/Williamsville South) had both of Buffalo State's best scoring chances in the first 45 minutes, with her first shot hitting the cross bar and her second one saved.
  • The Blue Devils nearly doubled their score with three shots it the opening five minutes of the second half but failed to capitalize as the score remained 1-0.
  • The Bengals outshot Fredonia 10-9 in the second stanza, including five on goal, but consistent saves helped the Blue Devils complete the shutout.
  • Taylor Carillo (Pine Bush/Pine Bush) and Alexis Hanson (New York/West Broward) combined for three saves in net for Buffalo State.  
  • Fredonia held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
 
FOR THE FOES
  • Gabby Alston scored the lone Blue Devils' goal off an assist from Shania Platt.
  • Sabrina Suriani tallied six saves in net for Fredonia.
 
NOTEWORTHY
  • With its win over Buffalo State, Fredonia earned two more points in the season-long "Battle by the Lake" competition. The Blue Devils currently have a 4-0 lead after a 3-1 win in women's volleyball on Sept. 17.
